Fiddlesticks! Just came back from the movie The Descent. It's a British movie by the same guy who directed the excellent Dog Soldiers.
I first saw the ad for the movie on tv and thought it was one of those hollywood horrors. Then when i found out Neil Marshall was the director i straight away decided to watch it.
Let me tell you i am glad i didn't bring my mom with me. We planned to watch it with the whole family but my dad hates horror movies. Anyway, it would have scared the hell out of her.
Alright...
The movie starts with a few girls going white water rafting and we find out that they're into extreme sports. One of the girls family dies after the rafting trip. One year later the girls get back together plus a few more girls to go for a caving expedition.
When they start going into the cave that was the part i was getting ready to get out. I'm claustrophobic and the movie really captured the atmosphere well. I couldn't stay put in my seat. I just felt like i was stuck in the cave with them.
Once inside the cave they encounter some monsters and then the violence starts. There are LOTS OF SCARES AND LOTS OF BLOOD. Also lots of cringe worthy moments especially a bone breaking part. It's no hollywood horror. You see the violence and you see the monsters. There're also none of those cheesy one liners that annoy me so much in a serious horror movie.
I thought the movie borrowed a lot of ideas from other movies like Aliens, Pitch Black and even Blair Witch. Even has a similar soundtrack to John Carpenter's The Thing. The monsters look a bit like Gollum+Orcs.
Well, i'm no good in reviewing a movie but this is a movie i highly recommend. There's not much plot but the scares and violence are worth it. There's even a part with a knife so hopefully if any forum members watch it they can identify it.
