Fiddlesticks! Just came back from the movie The Descent. It's a British movie by the same guy who directed the excellent Dog Soldiers.

I first saw the ad for the movie on tv and thought it was one of those hollywood horrors. Then when i found out Neil Marshall was the director i straight away decided to watch it.

Let me tell you i am glad i didn't bring my mom with me. We planned to watch it with the whole family but my dad hates horror movies. Anyway, it would have scared the hell out of her.

Alright...

The movie starts with a few girls going white water rafting and we find out that they're into extreme sports. One of the girls family dies after the rafting trip. One year later the girls get back together plus a few more girls to go for a caving expedition.

When they start going into the cave that was the part i was getting ready to get out. I'm claustrophobic and the movie really captured the atmosphere well. I couldn't stay put in my seat. I just felt like i was stuck in the cave with them.

Once inside the cave they encounter some monsters and then the violence starts. There are LOTS OF SCARES AND LOTS OF BLOOD. Also lots of cringe worthy moments especially a bone breaking part. It's no hollywood horror. You see the violence and you see the monsters. There're also none of those cheesy one liners that annoy me so much in a serious horror movie.

I thought the movie borrowed a lot of ideas from other movies like Aliens, Pitch Black and even Blair Witch. Even has a similar soundtrack to John Carpenter's The Thing. The monsters look a bit like Gollum+Orcs.

Well, i'm no good in reviewing a movie but this is a movie i highly recommend. There's not much plot but the scares and violence are worth it. There's even a part with a knife so hopefully if any forum members watch it they can identify it.

*Edited out the offensive language. Please remember what forum you are in.
KVC.

sounds like a highly intellectual movie.

I can't wai to rent it. (really--no sarcasm)

I really liked 'Dog Soldiers.' As a matter of fact, I've seen it twice on TV. Not only was the story great, but so was the acting, the plot and the FX. There was also some excellent character development, which is sadly lacking in many horror films. If 'The Descent' is anywhere near as good as 'Dog Soldiers,' it'll be well worth the time and money to watch it.

No offense intended but I was real disappointed with Dog Soldiers.
I love werewolf legend/films etc and really looked forward to seeing it, after I watched it though it wasnt near as good as it sounded like it was going to be IMO. :(
Descent sounds interesting though , will definatly give it a watch.

rebeltf.

I think the problem with Dog Soldiers was that it was purely made for the british market. Lots of the jokes were very british and having lived here for 8 years now i still didn't understand certain things they said. eg. khazi=toilet.

however, the descent is easier to understand. the story is in fact set in the appalachian mountains and it is pure shock horror.

But filmed in Scotland!

It's a great film. Claustrophobic? Afraid of heights? Close-up first aid on gruesome injuries nauseate you? Heh heh!

There is a US Movie coming out called "The Cave" with virtually the same plot.

Sorry for the language KVC.

I just looked on IMDB for The Cave and it seems mighty similar. Will have to see to compare. Somehow i've been so disappointed with hollywood movies lately so am not that excited about it.

Last hollywood movie i enjoyed was Wedding Crashers which i saw last week. Hilarious. Vince Vaughn is just classic.

I've seen Sin City, Revenge of the Sith and Batman Begins in the theater of course. All three were great movies. Did you see those?

Revenge of the Sith was good. Batman Begins was awesome. However i didn't get to see Sin City. They didn't show it until i went back to Malaysia for holidays. When i came back to UK it was out of the theatres.

Guess i'll have to wait for the dvd.
