This weekend a few friends and I from the Snow College Outdoor Club went camping and rock climbing up Maple Canyon. (An awsome place BTW) We found the Outdoor Club from BYU up there and camped with them. Talk about cool luck.:)

My knife of choice on this trip was the DD (do to Ron's excelent recomendation;)). After finding a good campsite, getting things setup and a fire going everyone had dinner. Durring dinner I showed the DD off a little (plenty of oohs and ahhhs from everyone), used it to open packages, sturr the fire and cut Marshmellow sticks. It worked pretty good. The serrations are very sharp:eek: and bit into the green wood really well.

At first I thought the edge one the DD was a little dull but boy was I wrong. It sliced through all sorts of cordage like a hot knife through butter and made quick work of opening my MREs. I tried to do a little whittling with the DD but it didn't fare as good as my Buck 110 so I left the whittling to the Buck. on the other and the DD did a lot better a splitting slats for kindling than the Buck.

After slashing and bashing twigs and logs I checked the edge and could not find anywere that it had impacted. I was impressed because I had fully expected to find some dull spots and there were non. The knife was just as sharp as the day I got it.

As for the handle, it is very comfortable and at no time did I think I would loose my grip even when the knife was wet. While rock climbing I used the butt as a field hammer to loosen some rocks. I detected no shock and aside from a few minor scratches it held up great. I really like the handle. It feels so good in the hand that I would make up excuses to use and test it out. Good Job SOG!:)

The Kydex sheath that came with the DD is IMO very nice. When I first put on the sheath Friday night I wore it on my 3/4" Leather belt. It was comfortable but doesn't lay against my leg as close as I'd like, it sort of sticks out a little. But tying it down complete eliminates that problem. With all the mounting points that the sheath has, tying it down is easy.

Saturday while climbing I wore the sheath on my military webbed belt and found that way to be even more comfortable. For some reason unknown to me the sheath lays against my leg real nicely when attached to the Webbed belt. Even so, I tyed it down and prefer it that way. Tends to not get caught in things as easy compaired to not being tied down. BTW I use elasticy twine to tie the sheath to my leg and that works great for me.

Most of the time while wearing the knife I didn't have it snapped in, for two reasons; #1 very quick deployment of the knife and #2 because the sheath holds the knife is nicely. The sheath would need to be a little tighter if I was to carry the knife upside down but for right side up carry it's great.:) All in all I'm quite satisfied with the DD and sheath and I look forward to using it more in the future.

Thanks to Ron for recommending such a wonderfull knife and to all the people at SOG who made it.

Great report! It's good to see people out there USING their knives...
Of course it tends to make my knives jealous!!!;)
The Desert Dagger is not (yet!) in my collection, but I know that the handle (same as government) is one of Ron's "faves"...
I'm still looking for that elusive Ltd Ed version with the leather stacked handle... Not as good for actual use such as your camping trip, but cool!

Glad you like the knife!

Thanks Rob, your knives are about to get a lot more jealous.:D I have a roast in the oven and when it comes out I'll be using my DD or Govenrment on it. Yum Yum!:D:D

I can see why that handle is a favorite of Rons, I LOVE IT!

Get a DD when you can, it's well worth it. If I can find a friend or two that wants to, I'll be heading back up Maple Canyon this weekend for some more rock climbing and knife using.:D

My knives are drooling... (oops, that's me!:o )

Can I come over and help??? I'd say the Government would be the one to use...

Naw...Use a Tigershark on that roast...The roast will cringe when it sees that monster of a knife coming at it, and it'll fall apart on its' own.:D.:D.

Won't using the knife to stir the fire hurt the heat treat?
Not hot enough for it to be changed. Someone here will correct if I'm wrong but I think I remember reading somewhere that temps have to be in excess of 300 degrees in order for any kind of tempering to occur.

Sure you can come over and help, if you like Roast Beef cooked in a dutch oven with Onions, Carrots and Potatos.:D

The Government might work better than the DD, but the DD did really well last night. Maybe I'll try the Government on some of the left overs. Twas a BIG roast so I'll probably be eating on it for the rest of the week.

Sogman, I'll do it as soon as you send me one:D hee hee hee
