I've heard some really bad news about the CRKT Steve Corkum First Strike and was wondering if anyone had a little more info on it. Looks sturdy and really cool; especially for the price. Any replies and help GREATLY apprecieate. Thanks ahead of time.

The knife reviews thread said that it came dull and hard as heck to sharpen. Just wanting a little elaboration and if anyone had any good or great experiences.

CRKT can be hit or miss on their factory edges, and the sheath is pretty plane-jane, but the knife is nice.

Hi there
I have a First Strike Medium, it was blunt. took very little time on the Edge-Pro to sort out though. Cool knife, not much into the whole Japanese thing ,but will look for a large one.

I handled a smallish First Strike and found it quite uncomfortable in the hand - very hard and bumpy. It's obviously designed as a self-defense knife, but I'd personally never buy and SD knife without a substantial guard. Also, the handle seemed on the short side. Possibly the larger model would correct some of these problems. I think it's an extremely attractive piece, and I also like the grind (although it's probably not all that well suited for utility).

I'd DEFINITELY recommend handling one before you buy.

The ones we have had come in have been pretty dang sharp. I am going to concur about the grip, though. It seems very thin and the cotton, or whatever they are using, is very corse. But maybe that is my problem with my delicate little girlie hands. If you haven't handled one yet, be sure to do so before you buy.

Hey Knifeclerk!

Do you have an actual shop up in Santa Cruz? I thought I'd visited everything around here, but maybe not...

having seen a early run & later runs i think crkt took care of the edges in the later runs.
the ones i've seen have been sharp,& I think the handle on the small one is too small.

I got one the first versions of the larger one. My personal experiance is that it was not a very good knife mostly due to it's sheath and the sharpness. Overall it just didnt fit what I wanted out of it.

SCDUB; Yeah, I work at the Merlo's Cutlery in the Capitola Mall. I also used to part time at the Outpost in the village. I had to stop that gig because it required a full day's work when I can only part time.

Merlo's Cutlery? There is one in Santa Maria I visit sometimes, but I'm not sure if it is the same one your speaking of. I usually only see girls with aprons in there.

That's pretty odd - I own many CRKTs and not a single one of them came with a less-than-keen edge. They were all consistently shaving sharp on the edge (no pun intended) of being hair-popping sharp.
But I can imagine how this "new" grind CRKT has never put on their knives before can cause manufacturing problems.

I'm not a big fan of traditional Japanese blades, but that First Strike sure looks interesting.

I've handled a bunch of htem. Saying the edge came blunt is really stretching the meaning of the word "edge". There's a thick apex that shows no signs of sharpness whatsoever. I usually argue that factory sharpness shouldn't be a big factor, since you can always re-sharpen at home. But this is taking things a bit too far -- at least put an actual edge on the thing!

Mine was a earlier model that came dull as snot.I put an edge on it and then it could take hair off my arms.I am no way a master knife sharpener.I like mine, very thick ,stout blade.

Yeah, Merlo's Cutlery is a chain. Our Santa Maria Branch is supposidly very popular although I've never been there. (I heard that david carradine is a regular.) And yes, we do have to wear aprons.
