If putting the coating on the knives is an "extra" step, why do they cost so much less? I am assuming that it is to hide flaws in workmanship with the coating. Seems to me that if all of the blades were the same underneath, the satin finish would be the cheaper.

HOMEBOY2002,

Welcome to the Busse forum. The satin finish requires much more hand-finishing and thus more time spent on each individual knife. Our tests have shown that the blade coating does not adhese as well to the highly polished surface of a satin finish as it does to the slightly coarser finish that is present before polishing. Therefore, if we spent the extra time required to polish every blade, we would have to charge more for coated knives that would offer lower performance in regards to coating adhesion.

Hope this helps,

Jerry Busse

HOMEBOY and Jerry,
Welcome to the forums.

Hope you guys will stick around;)

I have removed the coating on some of the smooth coated knifes before.
the finish under there is not that rough.
Just take a little work to get it to polish up.

Homeboy2002, Welcome to the Busse forum.

See ya learn something new everyday, I never knew the exact technical reasons behind it :)

Homeboy2002, welcome to the Busse forums.

Be sure to join in on the threads around here. A lot of information, some great guys, and nuclear tough blades.

Have you made the plunge yet? Any model you're eyeing??

There is plenty of real-use feedback available here. Just ask.

See ya,
Mike

Homeboy - Welcome to the Busse World! it's good to have ya here!
i've seen some take those finishes off their Busse knives, and they still look Sah-Wheet! ! ! In fact, i rather LIKE the slightly textured finish; it reminds me of True Damascus-Wootz steel, the prettiest stuff around, only tougher & stronger, cuz it's INFI!
If you wind up with a Busse knife (which i highly recommend) please let us know by posting so, OK? We will rejoice with you!
Until then,

Hey fellas, thanks for the warm welcome. I currently do not own a Busse, but I am in the market. But like so many of you here, I just can't decide on what to get. What I am leaning towards right now is a BM-E in a satin finish, complimented by a Killer B with an all black wrap and a satin finish as well. I have contacted BuyBrown about having a custom piggy-back sheath made to carry both. What do you think?

Definitely get the BM-E. It is an awesome chunk of steel. After you use it a few times you come to understand that the balance on this baby is soooooo good that it doesn't feel like a big knife.

As far as the coating goes, I used to feel like you, in that I didn't want the coating. I thought that, after some use, the blade will get its battle scars and the coating will look like $hit. But after getting the standard BM-E and using it, and seeing the coating get broken in, I really like it. There's not another out there like it. The feel of my blade is slightly different from any other out there and the coating will have its own unique scars.

If you can, go to a show and hook with with a Busse rep (Andre Dumouchel's out here on the west coast). Handle a bunch of the blades, and you'll see that they are all slightly different.

Homeboy,
Sounds like a nice combo. I also like the Satin finished blade.

Satin finished eh?

Looks like your on the right path Homeboy:D
Welcome to the world of nekid INFI! Let us know when you get them:)

BM-e and the KB, can't go wrong there no matter what you choose for the finish.

I really have to admit I've grown to love the crinkle finish that Busse uses. It is an extremely durable finish and as Ad said looks good once it gets some character marks :D:D

Good Evening Everyone-

Welcome to BladeForums, Homeboy2002.

It appears that you're in the same spot that I was in about three or four weeks ago regarding a Busse purchase. Here's how I made my decision with the help of Marc Fratello (Marc@BusseCombat.com in the Busse Custom Shop) based on his analysis of our discussion. This was/is my FIRST purchase of Busse knives.

I've ordered two Busse knives scheduled for delivery in the next few weeks:
  • Assault "Pepper" Shaker in a bead-blasted finish for EDC on neck.
  • Steel Heart E with black crinkle-finish (CG) blade on gray micarta scales for hiking/camping use.
Both knives will be "users" in their intended roles. The satin or bead-blasted finish will show scrapes from use, but it is a very pretty finish. The crinkle finish will show initial wear on the "high" bumps, then settling down to a reduced level of overall wear in the long run.

If push comes to shove, you can always send a Busse knife with "worn" Combat Grade crinkle-finish back to the workshop for a new application. You can otherwise request that they strip it off and polish the blade to a satin finish for a few dollars.

With that in mind, I'm going with the bead-blasted finish on the Assault "Pepper" Shaker because it is a Variant, after all. ;)

The Steel Heart E will have the standard Combat Grade finish so the knife isn't artificially "babied" from normal chores on the trail. Appearances can always be changed by a little trip back to Ohio via UPS. See some of the other threads that discuss "beauty through functionality," and you'll feel real good about the crinkle-finish.

Marc was helpful with regard to this decision. Once the two knives arrive, I'll be sure to post to BladeForums.com regarding my initial impressions. They should be here within the next three weeks.

Regards,

Nimrod, you just couldn't resist could you? :D

Homeboy2002, the BM-E is an excellent choice, the Mistress series are my favorite Busse knives to date. Well on the large side that is...;)
