She had never, ever asked me how much I paid for a knife. So here I was, explaining to her that I had been looking for this Steel Heart I for years and one had been offered for sale, how that it was the original Steel Heart I I should have bought but didn't years ago, how it was a great buy (all of my knife purchases are "great buys")so I jumped on it. She says the usual, "That's nice. I'm glad you found it." Then she looked over the top of her glasses and said very pleasantly, "How much was it?"
She didn't blink at the answer, but as any married man knows, I've now got to come up with a really nice Christmas gift for her this year.
