That's beautiful. You make me want to learn how to make knives!
Tell me, how would someone get started? I don't have a forge or anything like that. Are they needed or is there a "ghetto" method? :P

you could make a fixed blade out of an old file, check youtube for how to videos
 
yes to my understanding you put it in the fire till it loses its magnetic properties

Slow down.
Before you get all the wrong ideas and false hopes,
Go check out the "Shop Talk" sub-forum and read all the stickies.
As for making a knife out of a file, it's much easier just to purchase a bar of 1084, rather then having to deal with Annealing the file.
