The sky to the east is orange at 7:30PM. Not a good thing. 30 miles seems like a long way, but we live on the edge of a canyon full of dry chapparal downwind of the fire. Glad I cleared the top 30 feet and I have a 20 foot wide yard.

Bless San Diego tonight. By noon a quarter million people had been evacuated. More since then. And the wind is still blowing with gusts to 70 mph.

God help the firefighters.

Be careful. In those wind conditions, that might not be enough. :o

Don't wait if it begins to approach. You can always replace belongings.

Stay on your toes anyway. 20 feet or even 30 feet is nothing really, especially considering how far those hot embers can travel. The fire that crossed the interstate today probably jumped much farther than 30 feet.

Good luck and be careful! With those sorts of winds there's no way for a home owner to protect their property, not even with a dozen garden hoses, and no sense in taking the risk to even try.

They've announced that 6 more c-130's rigged to drop fire retardent are headed in tomorrow. Today they had a converted DC-10. But there are SOO many fires and they are moving fast tonight.

I read that some of them were grounded earlier due to 75mph winds. Glad they're coming soon.

Here is a map of where the fires were at 16:00 today. They've spread more since then. Red is fire, purple is required evacuation area. pink is recommended evacuation. Notice that to the North the evacuation area stretches to the beach.

This will make things like a bug out bag a fashion statement instead of something for the 'lunatic fringe' !!

I've been watching that mess on TV. My heart goes out to those people who have lost everything to the fires.:(.

This is a sad story, so many becoming homeless so fast.

And have to start to build their lives all over again, the people there must be in shock.

I pray that the victims from this fire can recover from this disaster and have their lives back again.

Fox news reported this morning ( as did every other news station ) that "California is on fire".

California is not on fire , parts of Southern California are on fire, California is a big , long state.
I wish they would not make it sound like it's armegeddon for the entire state.

That said , best wishes to those who live in that part of California.

California is not on fire but San Diego most surely is.

We are being told that one of the fires burned down to the coast last night. Well to the north of us, thank God. We've taken in some animals from friends who have had to evacuate. We are still 5 miles outside the recommended evacuation area. And the fire is about 5 miles beyond that.

Outstanding effort from everyone around. Got Drs and nurses volunteering at Qualcomm stadium, the biggest evacuation center. So far they are saying that 300,000 have had to evacuate their homes and 1,000 homes have burned plus many businesses.

The winds have dropped and everyone is pretty hopeful that the fires can now be contained.

I have fought some big wildland fires but nothing on this scale. The thought of something like this happening where I live surely sends a shiver down my spine.

OOPs I mispoke. Going to take in our friends as well as their pets. Gotta run and get some preparations done.

BE CAREFUL, please. And BE SMART.

You're not very far from the fire line. Please be ready to get yourself, your friends, and their pets OUT OF THERE.

Don't take any chances, please. :o

[Of course, this is easy for me to say -- I live on the other coast.]

The wind shifted direction today. Good for us, bad for those on the other side of the fire. My friends got to return to their house tonight.

Don't know what the rest of the country hears. So far 500,000 evacuated. 1,750 houses destroyed. Fires still out of control.

Here's a map of the fires. Red is fire. purple is mandatory evacuation area.

Whew! I have been watching this through the services of Google Earth. It really gives you an idea of the scale of the problem.

Best of luck to all in the area.
