The Elegance of the 'Q'

The Q knife is quite an interesting piece unto itself. Its weight is almost nonexistent. Its blade is unlike any other. The lock mechanism is fascinating in its sheer simplicity. Moreover, it's size isn't 'too' small is what is great. Kudos to Spyderco for taking something so radical and making it seem mainstream!

Actually, while the Q seemed a great idea, it has not given any great satisfaction. I have not found the lock secure and I have had a very awkward time with the clip coming off. It broke the plastic in one and I had to return it to Spyderco back in December of 1997 and I then lost the replacement when it caught on something and pulled out of my pocket. Yes, it is a very neat idea, but it did not seem to work out well. In this, it is like the original Delicas and Enduras, where the plastic clips were worthless.

Hugh, I have to disagree. By comparing the Q to other, quite different knives you miss the point of my post. The Q is not designed as a heavy duty folder, but rather a light duty knife for a variety of light tasks while making a stunning first impression.

It's certainly not going to replace the Military, but for its purpose, it has 'intrinsic' elegance.

I collect the Q's. I have several variations of the Spyder design in both the thick handle and the thin handle styles as well as the PRCA design. Also the Moteng design is nice because it looks like Mountains. The first Blade mag design was my first Q.There are some private designs that I see every once in a while,But they are hard to find.I did get one of the Tropical design S.H.O.T. show pieces. I still need the flag design, but I'll add that one soon. Also I've seen a skull and cross bones design that I woild like to get.

Knifeslinger..where are you?
He's got the ultimate in "Q" collection...colored "Q"s, solid blades, all kinds of cool designs. I've seen some really rare ones on www.ebay.com

Other than the Calypso Jr., my vote for a friendly utility that I can pass around without funny looks would have been with the Q also. It is an elegant piece that has both form and function. Quite a conversation piece too. And the cost is low enough that if it accidentally breaks, it won't make me cry.

I saw a store that still had some of the H&K Q knives.

Their number is (919) 365-6391 Perry's Hardware and Guns.

There you go. Don't work for them, etc..

I agree that the concept of the Q is very nice. I bought mine as a knife not to scare the hoplophobes and I liked it at first. Then, I had the clip catch on something and tear out of its holders, destroying the holders. I sent it to Spyderco, who repaired/relaced it. I then was so taken with it that I bought one each for my son and his fiancee. Then I had the clip come loose again, this time sparing the scales, so I put mine away and don't carry it. My son had the lock spring come out on his, not once but three or four times, before he went back to his old Endura. I have no idea how his wife's has panned out, I know that she does not carry it.
