I found a new antique mall today that I had never been in before.
I found a 58OT Ulster. The one that was made from 1961-1966 and was only available through a Prince Albert offer. I haven't finished cleaning it yet but I was so excited I thought I would share it with y'all. I am suprised that it is in such good shape. Price was good too, $10.00. :D
I have no idea how rare they are....anyone care to venture a guess? Codger, Larry, LT?

Thanks,
Dale

Dale,
Nice one. Im not sure they are really rare but one in that condition surely is.
It should clean up real purty for ya. Post a pict when your done.
Thanks for sharing.
Larry

Dale,
I thought prices and COL was higher on the west coast,as compared to here in Appalachia and the rest of the rust belt.
Maybe those Seahawk fans are pawning their stuff so they can get to Detroit !!
You sure do get some good buys!
Did you get that 61ot?
That Ulster sure looks close to mint.
Ron

Ron,
I have two 61OTs I am bidding on right now. I hope to get at least one of them.
Yeah, there is a bit of Seahawk mania out here now. This is the best season they have had. I am excited. After years if rooting for them it is nice see them win. No one is calling them the Sickhawks any more!!! :D :D

The Ulster 58OT isn't as rare as some of the OldTimer models. Seems there's always one on eBay, but not always in good condition. $10 for one in good condition is a steal!

You think the 58OT was only available through the tobacco can offer? I know it was one of the knives offered, but it must have been sold by other methods as well - there are far more of them around than the other Prince Albert OldTimer knives. And I've read that the Prince Albert offer was used to get rid of knives that hadn't sold well otherwise. I'd sure like to find out more from anyone who knows for sure.

The 61OT is my favorite of the OldTimer folders. The size and blade selection make it perfect for a daily-carry pocketknife.

Best Wishes, and good luck in your 61OT bidding (I already have one).

According to Clemente's book, production on the 58OT started between '58 and '61 and ran through '66. I have two 58 OTs - One from the Prince Albert offer and another one, with no tang stamp, but an etch that says "Keen Kutter Hand Made K58OT" and it has the Old Timer Shield. (Identical to the Ulster except for the etch and tang stamp.) Also it makes sense that the Prince Albert Offer (see here) was to get rid of excess stock, since it took place in the early 70's.

Thanks Dave for the scan of the PA offer. I had not seen that before. I used to smoke PA in those days too. $2.00 was a lot of money to a starving college student just out of the military. My, how times and values change.

Thanks,
Dale

Dale,

Glad you enjoyed seeing the PA offer. I think those are some of the most interesting and obscure Old Timers.

These three modelsl were the only OT knives under the Ulster tang. Although as brought out the same pattern was used on contracts ect. I am attaching a picture of a full set including coupon that I presently have on display in Ellenville. To answer another question of the three patterns 400 THOUSAND of these knives were sold under this promotion. In fact last night at the Ellenville exhibit we had the walk through for the public I also babbled for 2 hours and I had the honor of having ( The legend ) Dave Swinden there to help out with knowledge. Strangly enough this very promotion came up in conversation I then told the story of the integrity of Schrade by telling the story of how 20 years later (well into the eightys ) someone sent in the coupons and 2 dollars and Schrade being Schrade sent a letter of apology that the promotion had ended and that these knives were no longer available however they were sending the then made nearest version ( then being made in lieu ). In other words they still honored the coupon. Now, that I though that was a pretty good story however Dave topped it he explained how so many knives were being requested that the eventually needed 3 girls to open the letters ( which almost all had 2 one dollar bills in them ) Yes in those days you could still send money in the mail, he told of a large envelope coming in requesting a knife when one of the girls opened it and stuck her hand in the envelope she let out a scream. It seems a southern fellow had put a muskrat pelt in as payment his note explained that he did not have the 2 dollars but that the muskrat pelt should cover it. By the way Schrade sent the knife. LT

Thanks for the notes there LT! I doubt we would have ever heard them otherwise! I missed my chance to buy the factory collection Ulster P.A. set on eBay. I'll just have to keep trying to buy the pieces. On that note, I do have a 58OT that I won cheap in a "hail mary" bid on a fuzzy ebay photo, and it has seen it's better days. It is, however a 58OT "type", and if cleaned and polished on would make someone a good display piece. If someone needs one, just email me and it is yours. I have another in better condition, and don't need this one.

Codger

You didn't miss anything really I had donated that set to the Schrade collection and in there infinite wisdom ( the seller ) had either lost or replaced the 58OT with a wrong knife I saw it up for sale. Of course if it came with a letter of authenticity you would have had nothing to worry about. LT

I did notice the blank shield. What was that knife? A plain Ulster?

Codger

I was remarking figuratively as to your decernment of what the knife was. The shield is a givaway ( even though this style was also used by Schrade Cut ). I really only passed over the listing but in passing knew it was not the knife I gave them when I donated the complete grouping so that they could have an example for the collection. Also I do not remember if the knife in the ad was jigged as I am sure you are aware the correct knife was sawcut.

This and other claims which have been made have been wrong this is not the first time. I could cite other examples but really at this point I am tired of playing the lone ranger. I do not even believe these mistakes are on purpose. More like some clerk who is reading what something is supposed to be off a manifest or bill of lading. Like I said when I saw the ad I just moved on since obviously I had not donated it to Schrade to be sold by Smokey. In fact I have actually even bought some of these items even though the description of what they were was wrong. Often times not only are the listings wrong but sometimes they fail to mention pertinent information. Like I said I moved over the ad fast so maybe I am all wrong but I remember thinking it and making that quick assessment. By the way I donated the set through Tim Faust who used to be the Schrade Moderator and was an executive with the company. In fact when Tim got to busy to keep up with the forum was when I started posting just to keep it alive. One guy in a lifeboat look at us today a veritable armada. Well perhapes I was more like typhoid Mary giving everyone the disease. Long live the Schradeaholics. LT

Here is a slice from the listing:

Interest in Schrade (all facets) seems to only be increasing since 2004. You have done well to carry the torch (and so much of the history) for all these years, and it must be good to finally see some fruit from your efforts. Some of us are quite fruity as a matter of fact. We are amassing all sorts of information here in this "web book" almost daily. And a few here are sifting the information into a semi-coherant form. That also is a daily process with all the new knives being shown, new questions being asked and answered. I'd say Albert and Henry (and possibly even George, though he was a curmudgeon codger) would be glad to see the results of you lighting the candle AND cursing the darkness.

Codger

Well I wasen't alone, the woofer, Big dog, Glenn, the Don, TTP excuse me if I leave someone out from the old timers ( get it Old Timers ) didn't someone make a line of knives with that name.

Anyway that knife still does not look right to me ( for whatever that is worth ) and is not the one I gave them however I hope for Bobs sake I am wrong and it is right. LT PS Phil I do not know if I said thankyou that was a nice gesture. I sent a couple of bits of junk I had lying around as a thankyou. It has been hectic and frankly I do not remember if I said thanks. LT

So while making my nightly sojourn and paying Homage to the giant entity of ebay what appears 6602113882 now this is what these look like albeit the main blade on this one is down it is a correct example. LT

Thanks LT for sharing your picture and your vast knowledge. Your information is quite helpful. I always appreciate your knowledge combined with humor.
Thanks for "keepin' the Schrade faith."

Dale

Hey, my ears are tingling. :D

I was aware during the auction that the one knife was a mis-match, and bid accordingly. Here's the topic:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=385437

I already have a near-mint 58OT that I purchased some time back, so it's all good. The package hasn't arrived yet, but when it does I'll post a pic of the tang stamps and Old Timer markings.

Best Wishes,
Bob
