The Endura "family" . . .

I've carried three different Spydercos for the last two-three months, and I love them. (Endura 2, Endura 4, and a stainless Native.)

My question is on the Endura family of knives: what is the evolution of the Endura model? For example, what was different between the generation 1's and 2's, the 2' & 3's, and so on? I'm mainly interested in the FRN handled versions, or whatever they were when the model started out.

I know there are steel differences, handles shaped differently, etc. I'm just wondering what the motivation was for the changes as they occurred.

My apologies if this has been covered before. :o

All of the FRN handled Enduras with molded clips are considered first generation. The mold went through several changes to strengthen the clip before the total redesign with the metal clip and barrel bolt. Ths stainless handle model was considered the second generation and had a different model number. The FRN version with the barrel bolt clip is the third generation and the latest with steel liners and screw construction was another total redesign that became the fourth generation.

All of the changes were driven by a desire to improve the product.

I have a "Clip-It" with G-2 STAINLESS on the blade tang, and US AND FOREIGN PATENTS on the clip; I bought it with the understanding that it's a second generation, but if the stainless Endura is second generation, then do I have a first generation Endura? It does not have a steel clip or barrel bolt.

Edited to add: I just figured it out; I bought this one from LarryM, and I thought G2 meant generation 2. but now I realize it was the blade steel.

So, I assume there are variations in appearance in the first generation Enduras?

You might want to have a look at Spydiewiki, and especially at their page on the Endura.

There's no FRN Endura2's ? I always thought just the VG-10 FRN models with the dent in the lock release were the E3's. Mine's an ATS-55 FRN with no dent. I thought that one would have been an E2. Whatever.

That's why I started this thread - I see Enduras of various vintage on fleabay & elsewhere, and they're identified every goofy way you could imagine. The point about the molds changing to make clips stronger, etc. explains (at least to me) why there are minor differences in appearance.

They're still great knives, though, no matter what model/type/vintage/style.
