arrived yesterday. just wanted to say thanks to esee and all the folks who work with em. nice little kit and a derned nice gift! much appreciated!!!

It doubles as a flare. You can shoot fireballs, 30 feet in the air with a good striker. :D

The fire kits we are making and shipping now are using the regular ferocerium rod material and not the Misch Metal we originally used. So the fire balls might be a bit smaler bus still start fires with no problem. The only vendor we knew of for the misch metal became unreliable and we could not get the material in time to get the kits to our dealrs on time. Mike

They have a lot of different sizes of Misch metal firesteels available. I have bought from them before. I do not know if they can supply a business with enough to repackage in firekits like ESEE needs though.

I would obviously use the back of my knife as a striker; does the powder coat on the ESEE knives allow for a decent spark?

I've got several of the old kits, and a couple of the new. The older misch metals don't damage a knife edge very much. The newer kits are a bit harder, I recommend either using them as a backup to matches, when dulling some knife isn't a big issue, or using a striker. Goinggear, firesteel.com and lmf have some great strikers for ferro rods.

As mike said, the new kits aren't as explosive with flares of sparks. But it'll light tinder just the same. Only issue I've noticed is that it's not as kind to a knife edge. I don't think the coated spine would work well, but I haven't tried it

I'll try to get some video up in the next couple days.

I forgot, to ID, from what I can see in my kits:

the old misch kits have the old crest style logo, and the rod is held in place with a screw

the new ferro kits have the circular logo, and the rod is expoxy'd in

the rod is held in place with a screw the new ferro kits have the circular logo, and the rod is expoxy'd in

so when the time come that you need to replace the rod, you need to glue it in place from the inside of your esee firekit waterproof container ? Does the epoxy hold it firmly in place ?

I'm yet to hear of anyone replacing the rod on fire kit. I'm sure with enough labor it could be done, but when I burn my two up I'll just buy another most likely.

There have been some heated threads about the subject.

i usually dont need more than 1to3 spark to start a fire.. depending on the weather... so a fire rod stay with me for a very very long time anyway.. i'll most likely buy another one too. I thought i heard/reed someplace that you can replace the rod in those kit.

I didn't received my Rat Pack from ESEE yet so i couldn't tell how the firekit is made and IF its replaceable. Thx for the info

Basically, it's not replaceable. Just get a new one when it runs out in 50 years

:)

Dull them both about the same I’d think. The striker that Going Gear sells is well worth the $1.49. Works great and is small.
