Chime in people, what knives do you consider "essential". Maximum of 20, please. I think this will help the newer members and neophyte collectors, as well as be a good indication of preference. For simplicity I'm listing production, but feel free to list customs if you think they belong. I am aiming at providing a good range of knife shapes/sizes that would leave a person with an inventory to tackle nearly any situation. (also, I'm Canadian hence the absence of balis and autos :()

Here's my little list in no particular order( a slash denotes an either/or situation)

SAK, Buck 110/112, BM AFCK, Spyderco Endura/Delica, Spyderco Military/Police, Sebenza Large/Small, Becker BK9/Swamp Rat Camp Tramp, BM Mini-Griptilian, Al Mar SERE 2K, Leatherman Wave (why not multitools, they've got blades), Swamp Rat Howling Rat/Bandicoot/Busse Badger Attack, Busse Battle Mistress(?)... well, how's that for a starter? (hopefully not too lame, but I'm relatively new to this expanded knife world!)

Shaun.

My top 10 essentials would be, in no particular order:

Benchmade - 710HS
Benchmade - 806D2 AFCK
Al Mar - Sere 2000
Chris Reeve - Sebenza
Microtech - LCC w/s30v blade
Buck/Mayo - TNT
Camillus - E.D.C. w/either D2 or Talonite blade
William Henry - Black & Tan carbon fiber Spear Point
Kershaw - Boa
Emerson - Commander

These are a few of my favorites that I own or have owned in the past. In some way they have left a lasting mark, either edge retention, ergonomics, locking mechanism, craftmanship, or any combination of these qualities.

Hmmm....

(no particular order)

Cutters Knife & Tool Brend folder
Large Classic Sebenza
Benchmade 710 in M2
Benchmade 705
Benchmade AFCK D2
Benchmade TSEK
Benchmade 42SS
Benchmade 43
Benchmade 940 Titanium
Leatherman Supertool 200
Cold Steel Arc Angel
Victorinox Swisstool
Victorinox Cybertool
Victorinox Electrician
Cold Steel Voyagers (at least one of each size)
GT Mini Auto
S&M Barlow
Spyderco Police flat ground/plain edge
Spyderco Chinook
Anything from Bob Dozier
Something made from Talonite (I have a couple of Allen Blade's)

***Edited to fix a typo and add one knife

Max of 20? There's only 2 on my list for the 'essentials'.

Sebenza
Spyderco SS/FRN SpyderEdge Delica

The way I see it you need a good plain edged knife, and a good serrated edged knife. The Sebenza is exceptional IMO, and the Delica's VG10 Spyderedge will tear through whatever I need serrations for.

BM 94* series
MT LCC
Sebenza - Lg or Sm
Carson - Any
Blackwood - Any
Onion - Any
Mayo - Any
Korth Bali
Simonich - Neck Knife
Rinaldi - Lg Talonite Fixed Blade

That should just about do it. I'm almost there, but it'll still take awhile.

Being frugal with children etc., I can heartily recommend these as good value but not necessarily top end. The most expensive by far is the A1 at $92+shipping.

Some variation of this is with me everyday.

"The Essentials" of knife collecting is not any
one brand or model of knife for a novice collector.
They should be a representive example of EACH type
of knife, blade, lock, shape or any other
distinctive feature that makes the sample knife
measurably "different" than any other knife in the
collection.

Beyond these criteria the collector should foucus
on personal desires and not "shotgun" their efforts
as so many here do. This will hold down cost and
yeild higher satifaction to the collector as it
will truly be "his" collection reflecting his
personality.

Not sure what you mean by essentials, but here are 'production' knives I'd definitely suggest everyone try out sometime. These are just knives that impressed me and changed what I thought a great knife was.

1. Chris Reeve Sebenza

5. Busse Combat Battle Mistress

Nothing against Benchmade, I had a 970 and a 975 and liked them a lot. They're just discontinued.
