Okay, got back from the CTKS show in Austin, and am fired up about building some new equipment...

Managed, somehow, not to spend my equipment fund on the zillions of schweeeeet knives they had in Austin, so I'm searching for a motor. I'm looking at the single-phase, 2-3 HP TEFC motors at

http://www.emotordirect.com/index.html (I wonder how many fingers I could lose if I put a *10* HP motor on that sucker?!?)

And I'm not seeing the catch...any thoughts, any caveats? I looked at Baldors, but they seem to be WAY outta my league. Also, in another thread, someone mentioned a VFD controller as being a better alternative to a DC controller, since you don't apparently lose torque as badly as with DC...anyone have a link on where to get one or get info on them?

Finally, I'm having difficulty in finding step pulleys for AC speed adjustment. Are these normally something you have to scavenge, or have Rob Frink build, or can you order them from somewhere?

surplus center has 1 1/2 V/S motor and you can get the controller and the sink for around 250 that is a good deal

Hey, Zodiac! While I'm really hoping for 2+HP, I'd love to take a look at that kit you mentioned. What's the link to Surplus Center?

Hi KAL: AS L6 stated check out electric motors on ebay.I bought my step pully at coast to coast now true value.:) dlee

Gus, if it was me I would sell a child and put a V/S unit on it. The 11/2 Leeson like the one that comes on a Bader III will set you back about 575.00 for the motor and drive. It's the way to go, really. If you upgrade grinders in the future keep your drive and buy their cheaper unit and swap em. Vfd's torque curves are only better if you run 3 phase motors on 3 phase power, otherwise you have to derate for 1 phase input. I have found dc units to be the more durable of the two. Holler at me at the Spirit of Steel and we can go over some options. mw

look in a farmer's supply or a rancher's hardware

they have everything that is needed on a farm and farmers use all kinds of motors and improvise alot.

if I don't have it, Carrol will, and if he dosn't have it frank or jim or .... well someone close by

hay I'm revealing all my sourses.

Ok, call me crazy (people do), but is anyone having dreams of setting up a grinder with the 3 phase 200HP (!!!!!!) motor? :D;):D

No your not crazy:) I thought about a 454
on a grinder. But with gas prices going up &
down like it does:mad:

I can get you a three phase, 30 horse motor, hat's the best I can do

(a 42x 80 time saver only takes a 20horse) what are you grinding?

Of course, there's an AWFUL LOT of CAR to get through, first...

WHAT?!? Take them OFF, first? PANSY!

:p
