It's been a while since I decided that it was time that I gave away something here, in thankfulness for your help, support, company and knowledge. Actually, this is not going to be the giveaway I was thinking of...it's a sort of "extra" giveaway I wasn't intending to do; just, sometimes, knives seem to choose their own fate.
So today at work (yes, Sunday shift
) I opened up my little closet, and the two Euro Brothers were there looking at me, like jackrabbits blinded by car lights.
I don't know why I left them here in my closet, since I have an SAK on my work keys that I carry whenever I'm here at work. I guess I didn't really have a place for them anymore...so it's time for them to go find a new home.
Lately, as some of you have read here before, I'm reducing the number of knives I own and carry. These two knives had been lost (I found them both last week, in different places, covered by darkness and oblivion). Now I got them back, I feel like they don't belong to me anymore, and I'm sure someone here will give them some TLC.
The first one is an Opinel #7 in carbon steel. This knife had been lost for a while now. I bought it when I gave away my old #8 (I was downsizing; it was, actually, the first knife I managed to put a good edge on, in my first (goofy) attempts of freehand sharpening, so this knife really has meant something for me. Also, as many of you might know, I really like Opinel's, and this one was more or less my only carry for some time. Then, I started the American pattern trial, and I put this knife away, and managed to put it in a place where I couldn't find it anymore. Going further in my downsizing process, I recently bought my #6 in rosewood, and when I found this one last week, I knew our days together were over. Humidity swelled the wooden handle a bit, but it opens fine; it just needs some maintenance on the locking ring (disassembly/oil) and it's ready to slice as fine as you could wish for. It also has a slight natural patina.
The second one is a Victorinox Alox solo blade. This knife came to me in a weird way. One day, I was talking to a colleague about knives (he's a hunter), and I started to talk about my passion for knives and so on. He told me about his knives (mostly fixed blades for skinning, etc), and then mentioned that he had a bunch of SAK at home. His son works for airport police, so they confiscate quite a lot of knives here (especially in summer), and since they really don't know what to do with them, sometimes the officers grab a few of them and take them home. My colleague's son had taken a few SAK's and brought them to his dad, but he told me he just didn't like them, and also he seldom carries a knife except when he's hunting. So the next day he came to me with a few knives, all SAK-style multitools, but only one "real" (meaning Vic / Wenger) SAK: the Alox solo blade. He told me to choose and I picked this one, tossed him a coin and the deal was done. I have left this knife on my work uniforms for some weeks, then decided to put my old Spartan on my keyring, and took this one home...where it disappeared inside a handbag. I do like the Alox scales, espcially on the solo blade (on a "multitooled" SAK, alox would mean no toothpick and no tweezers, but on a single blade it just means more style to me). The knife is in good condition, just needs the hand of a good sharpener (this one was a "victim" of early trials too), but it's a very nice one, with no flaws at all (as any Victorinox I've ever seen).
You can enter the giveaway for just one knife, or for both. I wish these knives worked as a "first one" for the winners (first Opinel, first alox SAK, etc), but anyone can enter the contest. I will run this till friday, then I will generate a random number with a die roll and fate will choose the winner or winners. I may post a couple pics of the Euro Brothers this week.
Thanks to all of you for making me feel a part of this subforum.
