"Global design and local Finnish design and production meet at The Sámi Knife II exhibition at Design Forum Finland. 22 designers have searched for a new form for the traditional Sámi Knife. In addition to top designers from the Nordic countries, the participants include designers among the most interesting ones in the world at the moment."

I visited the mentioned exhibition yesterday, there was suberb craftsmansip all-around. Design-wise... well, not all had grasped leuku's function. You be the judge :D

First an example from the master leuku maker Josef Laiti to set the standard.

If you want to know more about a particular piece (designer, maker, materials) or want to see a blow up just let me know. My photobucket account doesn't accept bigger than 1024x768 picture. I hope you enjoy.

Maybe not a classic, but I like the looks of the second from the top

Thanks for sharing

Kind regards

Wow! Very, very grateful for the info! We appreciate it

It seems that ylahella is still a preserved feature of the handle.

Hey Magnussen/Rick, that cool red-handled one remind you of something?

Interesting but most of those designs don't seem much of a match for the real thing.

I once bought a really stout handmade leuku, sold it by some reason (financial I guess)... But then again, I've seen better designs for knife that does what leuku does (size being one)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing these fantastic pics. Gene

Thanks for the pictures. There were some really beautiful knives there. It's interesting to see how different people interpret the same basic style of knife.

Thanks for posting!

I saw a couple that I liked, definitely!
Getting me excited and inspired for my upcoming Leuku build!:D

Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing! I've been thinking about picking up a leuku lately, this thread just makes me want one more!

On a slightly-related note, I just watched a Norwegian zombie movie last night- "Dead Snow", and one of the protagonists used a large leuku to dispatch several Nazi zombies, with great effect. :D:thumbup:

The one with the leather handle wrap whose stitching matches the sheath is some AMAZING leather work.

Do you mean the one with the curve in the handle? The dark brown one after that one has also leather handle. If you want to take a closer look I can send you the original picture, it's 4000x3000 pixels.

I'll be digesting this for a while, I will.

The fish knife is an interesting take, and functionally possibly my favorite so far.

awesome photos. Wish they had a complete book!
