hey everyone. I've thinking of buying the field pup, But im wondering how the aus-8 compares to bucks 420HC, honeslty. I know their not top of the line. But im looking for user that isnt overly expensive.

thanks for any help.

Honestly, I don't know because I've never used a buck.

I use AUS-8 all the time and it performs really well for me.

I've never had any problems with the steel, myself.

At the risk of starting a huge debate, for everyday use a lot of the "middle of the road" steels aren't all that bad. They may not be this month's miracle steel, but they hold a decent edge for a decent time and they're not overly expensive.

For a knife that's going to see steady, serious use that's not a bad thing.

See if you can get a chance to preview a Field Pup before buying one. The handle is an interesting design and it's an either love/hate sort of reaction in most people.

hmm, let's see:

1. both steels get sharp.
2. both steels get dull.
3. both steels can be re-sharpened easily.

No contest: get the SOG !!

Cheers,

Carl

i have a buck hunter and its a good blade stays sharp and is an all around good knife (i cant remember the exact name of the knife)

its probably a 119 . i wouldn`t mind a 119 , they look cool . i want a feild pup as well , but my next knives are 6 spydercos , then a simonich raven combat

I think the Field Pup is an excellent knife for the money. You can often buy them cheap on Ebay if you are not in a hurry to get one. I picked up one for $25 once (new of course).

I've used my "pup" to field dress several whitetails. Well up to the task, and the blade only seems to need minimal maintenance to keep the edge keen. I've only had to steel it once since I've been using it. Can't beat it for the price.

My 0.02. I do not have a AUS-8 by SOG (I do have three X-42 Field knives). However, I accidentally ended up owning a CS Outdoorsman in AUS-8A. I bought it thinking it was the Laminated version. I put the knife to a hard workout to see how dull it would get carving, whittling, stripping, shaving, batoning a bunch of 2-3" dried alder (fairly hard wood). After several hours I was worn out and the knife would still shave my arm. Being a firm believer in the "super-steel" of the month, I was very suprised. I put one of the X-42's to the same test and it also showed no signs of wear (but thats how BG-42 is supposed to be). My guess is the field pup or seal pump elite (both in AUS-8A) would be great everyday knives. Oh, yes, I have several 420-CH knives and they will not hold an edge. I have to re-sharpen my 110 three times to finish one deer.
