Dwight McLemore, a forum participant, has a new book out called "The Fighting Kukri". I have all his other books in the series and he does a great job of instructing on how to use big blades. I'll be curious to see how he does with our favorite bent blade.

Here's a link to the book Click Me

Looks like an awesome read to me. However, I thought I remembered Uncle Bill talking about the Gurkha training as being along the lines of: Strike to the neck, strike to the thigh, strike to the guts. That said, I'm sure it's much easier to instruct someone who has been swinging the same kind of knife since he was a toddler:D

I'm always very interested to see how martial artists incorporate ANY edged weapon into a combat kata. Upon handling the Spear Vala, I have been reading up on the training soldiers were given in using the the Smatchet. To be blunt...not much. It was designed to be a knife that a soldier versed in marginal hand-to-hand combat could become proficient with in a matter of hours. Neck chops, belly gouges, thigh slashes, and butt strikes. Brutally effective knife. Hell, I have even heard of them taking the wide flat beaver tail of the blade and shattering a sentry's nose with it

I digress:) Mr. McLemore's book look's very interesting:)

I watched a show with a guy who was teaching the Mongols to learn the lost art of shooting a bow from horseback. He said it was MUCH easier to teach some one who was an experienced rider to shoot than teach an experienced bowman to ride. With the bowmen he had to teach them to ride and forget how they normally use the bow since they are now on a moving platform. Sometimes I think that once you learn the basics you are good and everything else is just gravy.

I think the Five Rings said one should only spend 3 years learning new skills and then spend the rest of your life improving what you learned.

Totally random thoughts, btw. I really, really like Dwight's books though.
