I only watched a little. I can't tell if Redmond is trying to chop or split. Maybe he's mad at his girlfriend. Arnolds' axe has nails in wedge.
 
But look, clearly the firewood cutter is a figure of some significant representative value in terms of character development in the minds of the film makers and so the fact that every one of the choppers of these films exhibits nearly complete incompetence in the task certainly undermines the entire credibility of their characters as figures in touch with nature, providing basic needs of the family, in control of any situation. I can see it now, sitting in the stool at the multiplex-complex movie theater after the sage and the credits are rolling by with the name "Square Peg" there on the screen, "...Axe consultant to Mr Pitt". I know you could do it. You have the experience, the knowledge , the credentials, besides, there is no way Eric will be venturing into the heart of Babylon.

But in the eye of the general public - who know nothing about wood cutting - the ruse goes unnoticed. All they see is that John Wayne knows how to bust a bronc and sharpen an axe. Though in truth he knows neither.
 
Oh I'm just getting at how funny it looks watching the figures - lets say some more than others, I've never seen Mitchum look funny- in the scenes chopping like that. That's all. The rest is just a bit of light-hearted palaver.
On the other hand, from whatever perspective you have - non-chopper or experienced - the choice to include chopping with an axe by the film makers can give rise to reflection. Why is it so and what does it mean? and the accompanying commentary is an interesting enough attempt an an explanation or analysis, which we can take or leave.
