Up until now the wild edibles in my area have been few and far between. There is always tree bark.....Mmm tasty, the odd fern rhizome and the occasional Dandelion but on the whole pickings were quite thin !
The appearance of the these Early Blue Violets has therefore filled me with hope that other tasty trail snacks can only be just around the corner now !
Other than seeds and rhizomes, the entire early blue violet plant is edible. Leaves can be used in salads and to make tea, and candied violet flowers can be used as garnish for desserts. Violet vinegar can be made by adding blossoms to white wine vinegar. The leaves are very high in Vitamins A and C, with 1 ¼ cups of early blue violet leaves having about the same amount of Vitamin C as 4 oranges. In parts of the United States, violets are called wild okra and are often used to thicken soups.
Although small they are quite plentiful !
Came across lots of tinder fungus !
Always fun to mess around with !
Found some rabbit fur but no other traces of the rabbit~
Maisy did some sniffing~
Snicker remained on lookout !
I also came across this ants nest that had been dug up, probably some hungry Raccoon !
Typical section of the trail !
