The first snowfall, of the year, is special. There is something about, seeing the expanses of white, untracked; Before the snowmobiles and sledders get there noisy engines started, before the snowplows, come through and bury your driveway, before you have slipped and fallen and so don't see it as hazardous.
The first snow; When I look out the door of the smithy, It's like I have my own life size Christmas card. It is humbling to see.
To soon the spell is broken. I hear them coming. It won't be long before they make the turn, at the corner of the shop. I know all three will be there, in tandem, at full speed, reckless, in their joy, at being able to plow their long snouts through the whiteness. Budo, is in the lead, his massive black head, almost obscured by the depth of his tunneling. On his heals, is Finick, his all white coat, blending with the snow; almost unseen. Red Dog, huffing a bit, trying to keep up with the younger dogs, is in third place.
After making the turn, they see me standing there, observing and stop for just a minute, to give me greeting, just for a moment, then they are off to explore, the untracked whiteness. I look after them, smiling. What joy!
