The first ten model of the JKM-1 arrived and I'll be shipping them today and perhaps tomorrow.

For some reason the kamis did not mark the blades on these and I am not sure why. Perhaps it is because the know that JKM is gone. I just don't know but they had some reason.

The knives are all well done, very nice fit and magic stone mirrow finish, and pretty much to spec -- 7/5 inches give or take a little, with a blade of 4.5 also give or take. Weight about 5 ounces + or - a little.

I can see the signs of different kamis on these. I know that Sher made one of them at least -- very beefy! Sanu had a hand in these, too, and put the distal taper on his.

I am well satisfied with the quality and I believe all those who are receiving them will be, too.

Back to the packing pit!

Hi, Bill--
Every avid HI forumite is well aware that you've been unpacking a shipment from BirGorkha for DAYS now. I for one am picturing you and the crew working on stepladders to unload a giant burlap bundle that could enclose a pickup truck.
No need to reply--I wouldn't want to take you away from the job at hand!

Uncle Bill, you have a problem most vendors would give their eye teeth to have: merchandise being sold faster than it can be brought in, and all customers well satisfied and grateful for the opportunity to be customers -- in fact, most of them chomping at the bit to make their next purchase. Chomp, chomp!

After wandering our nation's postal system for about a month, my JKM-1 just showed up none the worse for its travels.

This is an excellent little blade and will be all that more special to me knowing who designed it. For folks who may have missed Bill's original post, here's the picture again.

IMO, this is a "must have" for friends of HI & JKM alike. If you haven't ordered one yet, do so. You won't regret it.

It is a great little knife and I think I have figured out why it is not marked. These were not made by Kumar who has the mark similar to the Star of David which James liked. I think they felt it was not proper to put Kumar's mark on a blade he didn't make so left all marks off. My guess but I am betting I am right.

Ha! Only here could this be called a "little" knife. Mine arrived Friday nite. And it's a little jewel. I just keep pulling it out of its sheath and turning it over. And thinking about JKM. Considered for about one second taking it along fishing yesterday but I opted for a well-used beater blade instead. Can't bring myself to mar perfection yet.
The idea of the dangler sheath is to pass your belt thru the two loops of leather, yes?

If I am not mistaken, one has to watch out for those pesky dangling participles....

Two loops of leather?
Mine has one piece of leather threaded through a tab in the sheath and will need to be tied securely in order for a belt to pass through and hold it.
Will you please enlighten me about the "two loops?"

Thanks.

It's my understanding that the little dangler sheaths can be worn any place that's handy whereever they can be tied.

The Sammi people wear some pretty heavy winter clothing and I have seen pix where the knives are tied on a loop over the shoulder, and sometimes around the waist.
Personal preference?

Yvsa--my sheath looks like Brian's in the pix above. Like you, I've got a tab sticking out at the mouth of the sheath. The SWNN has placed through a slit in that tab a thin strip of the same kind of leather used in the sheath. It's maybe 6-8 inches long and broadly flared at one end, which also has a slit in it. The leather strip as been passed thru the tab in the sheath twice before being tied off back on itself at the flared end. Thus the two loops. Because of my initial reluctance to in any way interfere with the perfection that is this knife, it never occurred to me to untie the leather strip. I just passed my belt thru the two coils. Sounds like there's other options, too, that would ride a lot lower. But the longer you make the leather attachment strip before tying it off, the more flopping and banging around the sheath is going to do as you move around, seems to me.
If the above description of how my JKM-1 is set up is sufficiently unclear, I may have to apply for a job translating instructions into English for made-in-Orient products. I can use the above as a work sample.

:
Jance I understand now.
My sheath just had the strap put through the tab and wasn't tied off.
I did tie it today, but I may put a longer piece of deer or elk skin through there to make it tie better and more securely.

And you're right about the longer it is the more floppin' around is going to occur. I suppose on the outside of the heavy winter clothes the Sammi wear they don't notice the floppin' as much?

I am not sure, but I believe I have read where the Sammi People were the originators of this style of knife?
And again if I am not mistaken were the ones who put a harder higher carbon piece of steel between two softer pieces of iron or steel?

Whatever and whoever, these are great little knives and I am very proud to have one designed by JKM!!!
