The forged blank article....

Awesome stuff, Nick. Makes me wanna go clean up my garage and make room for the gas forge and anvil I bought last year. I REALLY need to get that stuff in service.

You were saying that LAST year when I drove through town!!! LOL!!!! :D

Hurry up and get your act together and start showing some of your talents!!!

Nick... excellent way to advert your abilities... gotta drive down there soon and watch for real!

That is another excellent article. Taken together, these articles are the prefect answer to the common question, "what's the difference between 'stock removal' and 'forging?'" When you can see essentially the same knife made both ways, the whole thing is quite clear.

Now, I do have a question: What is the purpose of salt normalizing?

Good point Gollnick. :) Another excellent article Nick! :D Good job Randy.

THANKS guys! :D

The normalizing in the salt bath stress relieves the steel and sets the grain up the hardening process.

If it's done enough and at the proper temperatures, you reduce the hardenability of the steel... which is a good thing if you're going to clay harden a blade and want to create a cool hamon.

At least I think so anyway :)

and the 3rd series has you posing for the camera in a wife beater, no less. Now, I have been in an awful lot of knife beater's shops before, and no one there felt it necessary to wear a tank top. Gotta show my wife this one, too. :D

This was probably the most basic, laid back presentation on the differences between forging and stock removal that I have seen. I can't think of a better way to educate those that do not understand, than to show them this series of posts. I salute you.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Funny guy... if I was posing I would have stopped hammering and flexed!

Thanks for the salute :D Glad ya' like it!

Nice article Duece,
I like the way it's put together.

By the way I made some new Damascus Voodoo pins, you got any pain?

Now if I could just figure out how to fix that CHEESY grin.
Happy Forging KCC
