Earlier I was reading the thread about the chop off between the CS and the Busse and I was rather suprised at the performance of the CS. I got to thinking that I really needed to try out some of my knives against each other when I remembered that I had a S&W POS from awhile ago and figured I would see how well it stood up to some serious chopping abuse.
Now this was the pic taken today after sitting around for months uncared for and unsharpened ( would not shave hair and ripped paper ).
I decided that I would go after this old stump sitting in my yard for about 2 years. The stump that I cut was around three inches thick. Nothing too serious as this was a POS.
An after 201 somewhat lazy strokes this was my result. The blade bit deeply but stuck often and the wood was wet. One thing that I did not get that I expected too was having a handle fly off. The handles on theses things are some kind of rubberized molding that covers a half tang and I expected the handle to come at least loose.
What suprised me here was that after chopping with a dull blade and the reportedly bad heat treat Taylor gives these knives was that I had no blade deformation! Of course my finish was destroyed but who cares it is a cheap POS
.
I guess I really could not complain to much about the beast. Maybe I will sharpen it up and test it again. I don't have much to test it against though. My other knives are BM pocket folders, RAT-5, Custom WSK and I could likely get ahold of my bro's 4+ pound bowie.
