Hi all,

I've been playing with the thought of making a thread about this subject for a while now, but things have come in between. Long story short: been sick at home the last couple of days and today's the first day I felt slightly better (I got the flu) so I decided to take some pics and post up since I was getting tired of hopping around between the sofa, chair and bed.

Anyway, what have I got here... Well, I wanted to try out a lot of different Traditional patterns, and a while ago I was able to pick up a Kabar Peanut for pretty cheap. The pattern interested me quite a bit so I got another one, namely an amber bone Rough Rider Peanut. All good and well, and then I stumbled upon an auction for an amber bone Camillus 21... I won the auction and shortly thereafter got a Case chestnut bone Peanut as well.
All of 'em have gotten some pocket time and I'd like to share these little fella's with all of you.

Here's a group shot of the Four, in closed position.

Main blade opened, and ordered in a specific way, you'll read why... Top to bottom: Kabar, Camillus, Case & Rough Rider.

If you've paid close attention to the previous pictures, you'll notice that there are some similarities that can be drawn here and there.
The main blades of the Kabar and Camillus are pretty close, shapewise. The Camillus does have a saber blade instead of the FFG on the Kabar, but the overall shape is pretty similar. On top of that, they both have a more squared/rectangular bolster at the joint, whereas both the Case and RR have rounded bolsters at the joint. The Case and RR have very common bladeshapes as well, but both of these differ quite a bit of the Kabar and Camillus.
Furthermore, in both the Kabar and Camillus Peanut, the main clip blade sits behind the pen blade, whereas with Case and RR, the pen blade sits behind the main blade and the nail knick points in the opposite direction. Another thing I noticed: only the RR doesn't have a half stop on the clip blade. The others do.

Something similar can be seen at the pen blade. Both Kabar and Camillus look alike, whereas the pen blade on both the Case and RR are more "spatula" shaped. I like the latter more, for some reason.

The Rough Rider is by far the thickest and heftiest as well (on the right):

The bone on the RR is very well done. I'd like the Case peanut to be a bit more darker though. But that's personal preference. What the next shot definitely shows is that the pins on the RR are not very well peened. Or maybe not even peened at all. The f&f on the Case with regards to the pins is definitely better, but overall both are really good and pretty close to one another. If only the RR would have carbon steel blades...

The pins on both the Camillus and Kabar are done pretty well. Sadly, the plastic handled Kabar only has one pin, so the scales are bending up near the bolsters... I really love the bone on the Camillus (well, I think it's bone)...

Whatever brand you're buying, the pattern is definitely worth a try. I use all four of 'em and can't say I have a favourite. With regards to looks, the Camillus wins but that one isn't so widely available. For the overall package both the Case and RR are pretty close, but if you want carbon: go Case. The Kabar is also pretty fun to have and work with, but the scales are definitely of lower build quality than the others.
Here's all four of 'em on some shallots...

Hope you guys enjoyed it!

Yes, that was very enjoyable. It's always good to see a line up of the mighty legumes. Great little slicers and daily companions. Those four are good examples of the breed, and a great example of the small variances between the brands. Like a corporate expression of the type.

Good show!

Very cool. Nice work putting that together thanks!

No matter what else I may be carrying I'm never without my Peanut.

I've recently been carrying a Case Peanut in SS. Nice little knives with most of the functionality I really need in a day. That Camillus is a real winner there.

Looking them all tougher, it makes me realize how much I wish Case would leave the shield off of the smaller knives!

Very well done. A thoughtful comparison that folks will certainly benefit from. The peanut is a great little knife. I don't carry one as often as I should. Hope you feel better soon.

Well spoken! I couldn't agree more. Thanks!

That Camillus 21 is particularly nice bone!

I definitely agree. Thank you

Thanks! The Peanut is definitely a great pocket companion.

Thanks! I prefer the carbon over the SS versions though, but to each their own ;).

You've got a point. All bone would look "cleaner", maybe. The shield doesn't really bother me personally though, but I agree that an all bone one like the Camillus does have its merits.

Thanks for the compliments and the wishes, much appreciated. Quest for the future is to add f.e. an old stock Schrade one. Haven't got a clip & pen peanut yet with a long pull. But then again, who am I kidding... A collector always finds something else to add :D

I like both about equally well. I have CV and SS Peanuts (two of each) which should last me for the rest of my life I think.

Of course! I've really appreciated the SS in the RR Peanut, for example. I just really, really like the looks of a well used carbon blade, especially on a bone-scaled knife.

Excellent, informative compare/contrast of 4 peanuts, G'shark! :thumbup::thumbup:
I especially enjoyed your pointing out similarities between the Case and Rough Rider peanuts; I have a SS Delrin Case peanut, and I have 11 Rough Rider patterns with the amber jigged bone handles, but no RR peanut. I really like my Case, and I think I should look for a RR peanut to join its amber bone "cousins".

I could definitely recommend the RR peanut. Despite the lack of adequate peening, it's one of the best RRs I've gotten, f&f wise.

Nice thread :) Hope you're feeling better soon

I have a Kabar Peanut, a gift from Pete Stich 2 or 3 years back :)
