Being a big fan of Spyderco's great sharpening equipment I've been looking very forward to Spyderco's new, upcoming GAUNTLET Sharpening System. I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while. Is there any more news on it's release?

Also what about the Sprint Run of the 701 Profiles and what's the future of the GOLDENSTONE? I've heard that there are plans for the GOLDENSTONE in more grit selections?? Anyone know anything about any of these upcoming sharpening tools?

in on this one. looking forward for any info shared, as well....

lol...The annual question arises once again :)

That's precisely my point "adamlau" because I've been hearing a lot of really good stuff about this new GAUNTLET sharpening system but it still doesn't look like we're going to see it anytime soon unfortunately.

I've heard news bytes that it's due for release back as far as two years ago>> there was even a prototype of it at the Spyderco booth at the BLADE Show in Atlanta, GA USA Earth as this year's show. But I haven't heard anything since. I love Spyderco's sharpening tools and I've got just about everything they've ever made but I'm wondering if the GAUNTLET is ready for the open market?

I looked up some images and there were a few different sharpeners.
Is the Gauntlet the one that looks like the Lansky Fold-a-vee?

Sorry to say I've personally never seen a prototype of the GAUNTLET as of yet. It was a friend of mine who went to the show who told me about it. I do know for a fact that it's in the Spyderco product pipeline due to be released at some point>> but I've been hearing that for almost two years now. I know that the GAUNTLET could be released at any time but I just haven't heard anything definite as of yet.

Barman you could be right but I don't think so. Because I remember Sal himself saying that the GAUNTLET will have stones kind of like the ones that were in the original GALLEY V sharpening kit. Those stones were the "Cat's Eye" shaped stones. I also heard that the GAUNTLET system was a kit type sharpening system like the 204 Sharpmaker with more ability to sharpen other blade styles and edge types. So I've been told anyway.

But they've been talking about releasing this unit for some time now.

I went by this search and the first sharpener shown.
Zoom in and you can see Spyderco molded on the side.
As I said, I'm just speculating and as usual, came up with the wrong answer....:(
I'll edit my earlier posts so as to not muck up your Gauntlet thread.

We had a number of proto's that didn't make the grade and we had difficulty explaining the problem. Finally Eric had to sit down with the plastics people and eventually they understood. they made a new proto, which we just approved of yesterday.

The gauntlet is a design for the non commercial kitchens. One angle, 40 degrees. Simple, easy and effective. works with plain or serrated.

The Golden stone will be 40 degrees and with a fixture, 30 degrees.

The new "Galley V" will be bolted to a table (commercial) and is 20 degrees.

Hi JD,

The Galley V will use the same 12" Cat's eye stones, but the angle has changed to 20 degrees inclusive. Everything is still a ways off.

Hi Darby,

Still waiting on the CBN half. already have the fine stones in house.

Thank you "MO2" for digging up that old post of Sal's. I distinctly remember him posting that. I thought it was actually longer ago than Jan of this year. But still that was 8 months ago and we haven't heard any updates since then and it just seems strange that we haven't heard something from the company by this time.

BARMAN>> no harm done at all. Actually I would welcome Spyderco doing their own version of the type of sharpening device you posted. I've always had respect for many of Lansky's products and I do own and use various sharpening tools of theirs. But this GAUNTLET system is like a "Crazy Aunt" they have hidden in the basement so to speak  It was the late 90s when they gave us the 204 Sharpmaker which I dearly love>> and I think we're overdue for something new from Spyderco. And I'm really looking forward to this new Sharpening Tool of Spyderco's i.e. The GAUNTLET but it's like a well kept secret at this point

Am I reading correctly that there is only a 40 degree inclusive setting?
You can lock your wrist at a different angle to get something other than 40, or so that's what I've done on the sharp maker.

Also use light strokes on the diamond rods so to not damage or wear them out.
