Some of you probably know who Stefan Schmalhaus is, but for those of you who don't. . .

Stefan is a German journalist who photographs, videos, and reviews knives of a "gentleman" quality and style. Not all of the gentleman knives he reviews are "Traditional," but a good many of them do fit that category. He also reviews a lot of European knives in the tradition of European knifemaking. One of the best things about his videos is the history he incorporates into the discussion of the knife. Best of all though is the quality of his production: his photography and videography is top notch.

Well, Stefan recently had an English translation of his book hit the shelves, and I thought folks here might enjoy picking it up. It is full of great pictures and articles on a variety of gentleman's pocket knives. I haven't gotten my copy yet, but I look forward to reading it!

Thanks for mentioning this. I didn't know Stefan wrote a book about knives. I like his videos. Perhaps I'll try to pick up one of his books in German to see what some of the parts are called in German, if they're mentioned.

I have the English translation and the book is very well done.

All of that history you mentioned is briefly incorporated into every single knife he presents and the last half of the book is dedicated to modern knives that he thinks continue the traditional art and will be considered as future classics.

Highly recommend the book, but at the same time it is truly a double edged sword. I thought I had my traditional rotation of cutlery all sorted out but now Stefan wants me to have more knives

Good to hear about this. Stefan's videos are informative and very articulate, a welcome change from the mumbling ill prepared stuff that some people dare to turn out :D "Hi dudes, this is an er, er, well I forgot but it's er like neat, er so awesome, is my camera even focusing here??":poop:

I'd like to read the English version as my German is scant.

Thanks, Will

Thanks for the heads up! As much as I like the online community for knife information there's just something about having a good print book that covers your hobby.

Oh, and your link goes through your Amazon wishlist so if folks aren't careful you're liable to end up with a few additional copies!

Ooh, thanks for the heads up. I've changed the link now.
