hi all,
this is my first post on this message board. And i have recently required a GLOCK shovel, that they have on their website and was wandering if any of u have tried it out for survival and or just digging? it seems to be nice, as is the glock knife, however i haven't had the chance to check out any of the other shovels that fold like the cold steel. The glock also has added saw inside the handle. I was just wandering what u all think of the shovel? thanks

I like my Cold Steel shovel. It doesn't fold but it is super strong. It is capable of spliting a pitbulls head wide open (Don't ask).
It has enough heft in it so it is very easy to throw with great accuracy and deadly results if need be. I think the Glock shovel is ok for what it is, but definatly give the Spetnaz copy a try..

The glock shovel folds into a nice little package that is easily packable and light. Its bests for digging. The saw blade in the handle is only for very light work, like cutting a grooved area for a rope to slide into. Not real cutting. Its more compact than a fixed handle shovel. You can also angle the blade 90 degrees to the handle. But the Cold Steel shovel edges can be sharpend, and has always got a lot of good reviews from users. Cheaper too. In fact I ought to get one.

It should be okay as they only made knives and shovels before they developed the Glock 17 for the Austrian Army pistol trials in the late 70's or early 80's

The Glock digs fine, but I would be reluctant to do much chopping with it. I fear that the joint would loosen.

The saw is OK; I've used it to notch branches that were a little too tough to break without notching.

When you lock the handle into the extended position, don't twist it too agressively. A friend did this and it feels like he stripped off the "stop" at the end of the threading between the two shaft segments.

I also have the CS shovel referred to above. It feels stronger, being a one-piece design. I sharpened one side of the blade and it's adequate for knocking off small branches.

I carry both the Glock shovel and a Cold Steel in my 4x4. Best of both worlds!:D

I have the Cold Steel shovel and it has replaced my hatchet, outperforming it by a longshot. It's also a great weapon without looking like a weapon.

Here, I hope I did this right:

I have a Glock E-tool. I've given them as gifts to folks who want to have a street legal Glock when they drive across country. The biggest plus is that it is a real handy weight and size. Like knives, Fixed is generally more secure than a Folder. I bought my first E-tool for camping and to keep in the car. I am glad that I had it on a couple of occasions in the winter.
(For Ice, slush, and heavily packed snow, not fluffy powder.) It has seen some moderate use in the dirt. I have used the root saw, and was glad for it. (Sure beats gnawing!):D Each time I used it was on an occasion that it was the only thing like it on hand. Sure, other tools might have been optimal, but the opportunity or availability was the issue. I.E.: Nobody else had a shovel! In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king. :)
The Glock E-tool has served me well, been there when I needed it, and stayed out of the way until I did.

Edit: Welcome to the forums, axe handle!
You too, Butcher and Keith.

I just got the CS shovel..

how did you guys go about sharpening the edges on it?

well i did sharpen my edges to see how sharp it would get and how it worked on the glock shovel. I sharpened only one edge of mine(the left) with a fine file. It seemed to be fairly sharp. I also tried it out on some plant life out here. Just on some black birch saplings, it seemed to work fine, except i wouldn't want to chop with it all the time, because its like taking a folding knife and chopping with it, eventually it will get loose. However i'm sure everyonce in a while wouldn't hurt;)
i also have the glock model 23, and the glock knife. I absolutely love that knife. its not exactly a 'whittling knife' but when its hid under the pickup truck seat, or in a backpack it gets lots of jobs done. It seems that its a really nice knife for the money, i've had it for about half a year and i've abbused it to hell and back. And shows almost no dammage. Aand for any of you knife tossers out their it seems really balanced. its one of the only knives i really like to toss. Unfortunalty i almost lost it when i threw it at a tree and missed it hit a rock and rickoshade into a big pile of brush! i thought i'd lost it, but i found it:)
