Are any of you guys going to buy the Harry Potter DVD "Goblet of Fire" tomorrow? We are!

Yup!

I'll buy one - wide screen only!

As usual, I'll make a copy for the kids, and lock up the original.

I've tried to do that but many are protected. Do you use a particular software?

I HATE having my originals scratched up...

Yes, I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 from Slysoft

http://www.slysoft.com/en/

AnyDVD makes it possible to copy the DVD ;), and CloneDVD2 for the copying. CloneDVD2 give you an option to copy just the movie, or the whole DVD, including menus and special features.

You can download the basic programs for a 30 day trial. I recommend buying them - you get e-mail notices when the softwares are updated (ususlly once or twice a week.)

For the back up copies for the kids, I ususlly just copy the movie. Just put in the player, and it auto starts.

Disclaimer - I make these recomendations for individuals to make legitimate back up copies of DVD titles that you have purchased. Copying DVD titles that you have not purchased is illegal.

Good luck!

Just picked up the 2disc SE from Circuit City. There were maybe 7-8 people in front of me in line, and a couple behind me, and nobody didn't have HPatGoF in their hand.

And of course I have to work for 11 hours before I can watch it.:jerkit:

Can anyone tell me if the 2 disc version allows full screen viewing? I HATE the letterbox wide-screen format.

DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter work great and they are free. Decrypter removes the copy protection and creates dual layer discs that actually work. DVD Shrink uses Decrypter to remove the copy protection, shrinks the movie if necessary to fit on a single layer disc, and will burn discs with either the Nero Burning Rom or its own burner, your choice. The two programs are free, work seamlessly together, and make excellent discs. (Or so I've heard  )

As for the Goblet of Fire, I was quite disappointed with the movie. In my humble opinion, the strength of the books is the interaction between the three friends, Harry, Ron, and Hermione (she's so cute). The movie ignorned the trio an concentrated on special effects. :thumbdn:

I've used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter before, and found that they were useless against certain protection schemes.

I have never had any problems with the AnyDVD / CloneDVD2 combination. Plus they're a bit more user friendly. With the Decrypter/Shrink method, you have to run 3 separate programs (Decrypter, Shrink, and Burn) to obtain your back up copy. AnyDVD is auto loaded when you boot, and runs in the background, so the only software you are actually using is CloneDVD2. Also there's the convenience of auto notification of updates.

it's a good idea to try both approaches, and figure what's best for you.

Yeah, I know, we all want something for nothing. In this case, you can download trial versions for free. If you like them, they're $59 USD (not a bad price, IMHO.)

I have tried AnyDVD, CloneDVD2, and a couple of others. I didn't care for any of them. I also have never encountered a disc that DVD Decrypter couldn't crack. (When you use decrypter to make a exact copy of a disc I believe I read that it copies the encryption too, so it doesn't need to decode the movie.) While it's true that DVD Shrink employes two other programs as it's working, it handles everything itself and I don't even see the other programs running. I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

It doesn't, sorry. The 2 disc SE isn't available in fullscreen either. Maybe you can zoom in or something, but then it probably wouldn't pan/scan properly.

The cast/crew interviews are pretty cool (these are in widescreen too), and there's about 10 minutes of deleted scenes (a few of which actually have something important to do with the plot).

I suppose you could always do what we do when we can't decide between which knife to get: get both.

We went to see the version that they were showing on the IMAX screen at the Air & Space Museum. God, was it spectacular!

"The Goblet of Fire" on IMAX had to be positively SPECTACULAR!! What fun that must have been.
