Opening day for rifle.

Within 10 minutes I hit the stone wall I was heading for... I see 4 doe with a good size buck behind them. I aim at the buck.. sure enough, there's a frigging house behind it, the buck laughs at me and continues on his merry way.

Sittin with my back to the wall i'm trying to call in a buck. Sure enough I see what looks like a giant doe from about 100 yards out. I'm running irons on an m1a this year so I wait to identify, its doe or buck for the first couple days then buck only. Sure enough, its a freakin' moose. The moose continues to walk towards me, got within 20 yards of me and kept walking, deep down laughing that I wasn't going to get to eat her because I didn't win the moose lottery this year. Hopefully tomorrow the animals won't get the best of me.

230grains, you are outdoors, with a firearm, no walls, no carpet, no phone, while 95% of the rest of us are staring @ a monitor, phone, keyboard, or worse, "cube" walls, wishing we were anywhere but where we are at, & you think you are having a bad day ???:)
Hope your luck changes for the better my man, at least you know for certain the deer are in the area.
Be safe.

Great story 230, you'll score soon enough. I am looking forward to seeing pictures of a huge buck with your M1A laying next to it.

Good luck Man

Sounds like a wonderful day in the woods bro:) I would crap if I saw a moose, but anybody would in northern VA:D

Good luck:cool:

Sounds like a good time Mike even though you did'nt get off a shot. Be patient though good things come to those who wait. The bucks are chasing doe's right now at least here in missouri. So you never know whats coming your way. If you can sit on stand all day until dark you have the best chances of connecting with a buck. I've taken a few in the middle of the day so be patient my friend. Good luck and be safe.

Doug

Better luck tomorrow. Your thread title reminded me of Jason and the Argonauts. "The Gods are cruel and one day all of man will reject their use, just as I have done." LOL

If you got one in the first ten mins wouldn't that suck. What would you do for the rest of the season?

So one day driving up the canyons from Salt Lake City with my parents, my mom says "look at that horse, he's horribly deformed". I said mom, that's a Moose!

At least you can tell the difference.

Good luck next time.

I think most guys just hang around camp and get drunk and celebrate. :D But you do have a good point Dan.

Good luck dude. I feel your pain. Mind if I use your thread to share a story?

My brother and I got out to Bow hunt for the first time ever 3 weeks ago. We geared up all summer, scouted a spot in September and then hung our stands based on some really good signs. The first time out I was just the camera guy. He had the bow. We literally climbed into our stands and about 20 minutes later at 7 AM I signaled to him that a large Doe and fawn was coming up behind him. Holy cow!!! An actual deer on our first time out ever!!!. He knocked an arrow and waited. As the doe came into the only shooting lane he had, something (me with the camera maybe :D) spooked the deer and it bounded about 15 yards off, never to return to a good shooting lane. "Whatever though" we thought. Most people never even see a deer.

Last week, same spot. This time two hunters with two bows. Its the Rut now. We sat all morning and saw nothing. We decided 10:00am would be our deadline, and then we'd leave. (because sitting in the woods on a beautiful day during the rut is so terrible... I know, we're newbs). Sure enough, at 10 we lower our bows to the ground, put our packs on and descend the tree. As our toes touch the ground, we hear a twig snap. I look over Bro's shoulder to see the most awesome 6 point buck!!! Both our bows are still tethered to the drop line and our back packs are on. We stand there motionless as the buck comes closer. 10 minutes pass AND ANOTHER 4 POINT BUCK WALKS IN!!!! After standing motionless now for almost 25 minutes while these deer graze, a 3rd button buck walks in. We figured "WTF" may as well try to get one of us to a bow and take a shot. My brother is closer, so he goes for his bow. Our luck ran out. As he fumbled to untie the bow, he spooked the deer and all 3 ran off..... Holy S!!! Our hearts were pumping.

Needless to say, we'll be back in that spot alllllllllll day this Saturday. :D

I hope you get a break 230 and get the chance of a safe shot ....

You know we can stalk Deer all year round over here ... ;)
