Ugh, another great book turned into a not so good movie. Basically, the movie compressed only a few scenes from the book into the movie, leaving many of the interesting/exciting parts. The ending was what made the most angry. They must have chopped almost half the book and then ended it.

Don't get me wrong, it was still a decent movie, just cut horribly short and that mostly ruined the whole idea of the book.

Anyone else read the book and then see the movie? I feel let down by Hollywood once again

I've all but quit watching movies made from books. And I never read a book make from a movie. Another abomination is the whole Chronicle of Narnia movies. They only want to make movies out of books with certain characters, and you can't expect much accuracy. The best thing to do is watch the movie and not judge it on the book.

Awful movie.:thumbdn:

Wouldn't have been that bad if I hadn't read the book.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was not to bad for a Hollywood transfer from the great JRR Tokien. Most however are a huge letdown.

Hunt for Red October has a fantastic screen play. So while the movie missed a lot of items, it still kicked but as did the book...

I'm also almost universally let down by book->movie transfers. The funny thing, though, is that when movies are made that try to be faithful to the book, they are often runaway hits, or at least cult classics:

LotR trilogy
Shawshank Redemption
etc

On the other hand, you have atrocities like Starship Troopers, where they just buy the name and slap it on a movie they had already written. :barf:

I just watched the DVD last night but never read the book. I thought it was fairly boring--kinda slow to start and really didn't realize it was going to cut short like that. Is it a trilogy or something? Wouldn't have watched it if I had known.

I don't think I've ever watched a movie of a book I read (except for comic books) or vice versa--mostly for this reason.

That's the first book of Bill Pullman's His Dark Materials series. Pullman specifically wanted to write a sort of anti-religious fantasy in reply to Lewis' "Narnia" books which are transparently Christian.

So many books have been made into movies these days, it seems to be a way to create a cheap screenplay. Yes most of them do chop the books up, they really don't have a choice unless they want to release the movie in either a 8 hour epic or in a series. I go and I watch them knowing that the movie will not contain everything the book did. I try to enjoy them based on their own merits, not by comparing them to the book.

While I do not care for the Authors viewpoint , I enjoyed the film except for what he chose to name the famaliars ( he could have chosen literally millions of words but he went out of his way to choose one that would offend people).

Otherwise I found it to be an interesting story , I have no desire to read the books though.

That new Narnia film looks killer.

Agreed, it does look good. I have young Daughters, so it's fun just watching them get onto a good story that doesn't involve the pointless drivel of todays entertainment for young people.

i fell asleep thru more than 2/3 of the movie.

I thought i missed something great, but my friends said it sucked.

more time to grow for me :)

I'll probably watch it, haven't read the book, though.

By the way, the worst book to movie has to be Michael Crichton's Congo. Great read, rediculous movie.
