the good
i got the order of cpm154 woohoo it came GDA ? ( ground and annealed)
nice finish from the mill and it mills and grinds nicely better then any ats34 and 440c that i have worked with
well sorta
the bad :o making 2 "dress kabars" for a fellow marine has proven to me that using a :foot: :o :( delta 1x42 just is not the way to do it at least not fast now dont get me wrong its working but 60 grit belts dont last long gring blades :barf: so i have seen the light and soon oooo so soon im going to have to sell my soul and some knives so i can buy a KMG theres just no gettting around it and just like others i will keep the delta as a reminder of the start i had and to do small handle and sharping tasks
thanks for reading the semi rant had to get that off my mind

Stop whining :) and make yer own grinder !
And when, and _only_ when, you find that one limiting your designs,
you spring for $1000+ commercial grinder.

Look in this very forum for ideas on HMGs. Should not cost more
than $200 and few hrs of yer time.

I just got a KMG day before yesterday. I set it up yesterday and tried it out with one of the new Norton Blaze belts. After working on a 4 x 36, all I can say is !!!OMG!!! I can't believe the difference. I'm going to throw out my hacksaw -- I can profile a blade 10 times faster than sawing. I swear I can grind faster with 400 grit on the KMG than I could with 50 grit on the 4 x 36. Thank goodness I got the var speed, so I can slow it right down while I relearn how to grind the bevels.

Definitely worth the money!!

My Dad and I started making knives on a 1x42 25 years ago and after 4 or 5 knives we bought a Wilton 2x72. What a diference it made. I still use a 1x42 for sharpening and small folder parts but that's about all one is good for. A KMG would serve you well.

Butch,

Since you're local, if you wanted to check out my homebrew KMG once it's finished (should be in the next several days...just need to find a few more hours) you're welcome to. I overdid some stuff a bit, and went with a variable speed setup, etc so it ended up not being super cheap, but it could be done a lot cheaper with more scrounging than I had time to do.

I've been trying to explain what I did over at Don Fogg's forum in this thread in case anybody is interested.

Sounds like a plan. If nothing else, if you're free on Sun. the 19th my blacksmith guild has our monthly meeting at the Farm Museum in Westminster from 9-5. I'll have the grinder down there since it'll be getting used the following weekend for the knifemaking class. Also just an interesting thing to check out of you were unaware of the very active guild right down the road.

All part of the experience I suppose :) On a good note, when I went to go spin the contact wheel shaft I ran into a mill for sale that might end up in my new shop...it's not exactly "mini" though with a 12"x50" table
