Hi all, I'm writing about a knife that has served me well even though it's usually laughed to by knife connoisseurs. It's the MTech MT 20 08S.
The reason I loved this knife is because it is cheap a dirt, but cuts the mustard. I've used these to baton small log sections without any issues, clear shrubbery while in the bush, chop small branches from tree trunks, etc. It has a fairly tapered point rather than the broad point you normally find on machetes, which makes it able to stand in for poking and sticking where necessary.
At $15 each, they are cheap enough that you don't think twice about giving it double duty to stand in for a hatchet or batoning, even when it's straight out of the box. Because I've always kept a spare or two at home, at the end of a trip I often give them away to camping buddies.
In short, it's probably one of the most versatile and best bang/buck knives I've ever owned.
But they are no longer available
I've tried a few other noname branded knives but found the steel to be very poor. I managed to snap a blade clean down the middle while batoning some particularly stout kindling. If I bought a Ka-Bar it would doubtless be even better than the 20-08S, but at $200+ it'd take me a while to warm to the idea of using it in the field. ANd my camping buddies sure as heck wouldn't be getting it as a gift at the end of a trip.
So here's my question:
Decent 20" camping knives under $20: what are the options?
