The good ole days...

As a few of you know, I just got a Rolling Block 45/70 Sharps reproduction which I couldn't shoot yet, since I just got it Saturday evening, and I won't shoot on a Sunday. Which of course led to a long weekend of working the action, rubbing the wood finish, and fantasizing about what those days musta been like.

I still think that it would be awesome to take the gun hunting...so...I got to dreamin' and fantasizin' about that. Never one to be half a$$ed about cooking up a hair brained idea, I got to thinkin' how neat it would be to go out on my moose or bear hunt with nothing but period equipment.

Just then a mosquito landed on my arm, and I swatted it. Considering mosquitoes I thought maybe I'd cheat just a little bit, and carry some good bug dope with me.

After that I thought about how awful the mosquitoes were that time I'd gone wandering around the woods, got turned around, and lost my bug dope. Made me think maybe my GPS would be a smart modern day cheat too.

About then I looked over at my Dunham leather double stitched waterproof vibram soled work boots, and considered what loosely passed as footwear back then. A good pair of boots is mandatory in the woods, don'tcha know.

That got me to considering the rest of the clothes I was wearing. The Carrhart jeans, my T-shirt, the nice tight around the calf socks that don't bunch up in the heel of my boot during a long work day...

Then I considered my backpack...the ergonomic differences, the weight of food, the cooking efficiency between a stove and a small fire, the difference between a nice tent and a shelter made from the woods...my folding saw Vs. a hatchet (more weight) Modern high pressure ammo compared to blackpowder loads....etc.

At least knives haven't changed all that much.

I guess when it came down to it I was forced to consider how spoiled all of us who can log onto a computer, and read these posts truly are in modern life.

Also made me feel bad for the folks who still have to live similarly to yesteryear.

But I dunno...despite all our "stuff" one has to consider whether it truly makes us happier or not. Despite all our luxuries we still find plenty of things in life to be unhappy about...

I still feel like a jerk complaining about my six day work week and all it entails.

Funny how sitting there rubbing an old fashioned gun stock can become so thought provoking to a shade tree philosopher, aint it?

It's true. I hike with a lot of modern equipment (boots, camelback, GPS) but sometimes you just want to head out with a nessmuk knife and a hiking stick you carved yourself. You could always scout out your area with the GPS and make some trail blazes. If you do go out old school, don't go alone.

Geez
I have drooled over Sharps relics in gun shops here. There is something about all that wood and colour case hardening. All the ones I have seen are Pedersoli made in Italy. About $3500NZ for the Creedmore. Too rich for this student!!!!

Stuff can't make you happy. Only you can do that.

Does anyone know which Italian firm makes the best reproductions- the strongest metalurgy? It's changed over the years and I'm not current.

I'd be interested in knowing that myself. I've done a little studying, and all I've been able to ascertain is that the Pedersoli is good for the price, but not as good as a Shiloh Sharps.

It's all a bit confusing. I have a Uberti Bisley .45 Colt, and I'm told that Uberti was assimilated into Cimarron Arms, and now I'm reading EMF and Uberti are the same, and now it seems that EMF and Pedersoli are the same??

Hope the Pedersoli's are good enough to tolerate the hot Buffalo Bore ammo... :D

Thanks for the input, Cliff. I appreciate every bit of info I can get on this critter. As you can tell by my use of incorrect terminology, I've still got alot to learn. Incidentally, it seems info on this little gem is quite a bit less common than the latest and greatest re-invented 300 somethings, or bipedal ventilation rounds when scouring the internet.

What is the difference between a Rolling Block and a Falling Block action? Also still trying to figure out what's up with the Trapdoor Springfields they say never, ever to put hot loads into...

Thanks also for the info on loading. I'd been looking at the gun thinking you'd have to screw up BADLY to blow it up, but it's nice to have a bit of extra assurance.

As far as ammo selection goes, I'm looking at the Buffalo Bore 405 grain JFN stuff that's coming out at 2000 FPS. I'd like to eventually investigate some heavier bullets, but right now I'm still learning alot, and would like to stick with a nice, standard, likely to stabilize 400 grainish round than marching straing up into the 540 grain Garrett stuff.

Once I get the necessary reloading supplies, the fun can really begin.... :D I've read about people hitting 1000 yard targets with the 45/70 using proper reloads. Now THAT is freakin' cool. Nevermind that I'll probably never have quite that kinda talent...

Once again, thanks. I didn't intend for this thread to drift into another "Mikey got a new gun" thread, but in all candor I'm kinda glad it did. (sorry folks)
