Being one of us cursed (or blessed?) Knife nuts, i am once again facing one of the most difficult decisions we must make. Which new knife will i be adding to the stable? The patterns i am leaning to are the peanut and the texas jack. Howevver i am open to other sujestions that meet my criteria. Im looking for a jack knife pattern with carbon blades and i prefer a bonr handle, thr knife must be a real user that is very pocket friendly,my target size is between 3 and 3 1/2 inches. Also i gotta be able to find it for under 50 bucks. Thank u for taking the time to help, and if u wish share stories of ur own knife nut dilemmas and how u chose/solved them.

A $ limit? Save up your coins and see if you can snag one of the barlows that Charlie ordered. They might be dearer than gold right now.

My peanut is a constant daily companion, and I am a big guy. Big guys and carbon steel blades don't always go well together, my Case peanut looks like it spent about a hundred years in the Atlantic, I've only had it about a year and a half.

Not trying to throw a wrench in the mix, but you might go for one of the swayback jacks or swayback gents. Not sure if they made any gents with CV blades, but my SBJ is indeed CV. Couple bucks over your limit, but not too bad, and definitely worth the price.

The Code! You must stick to The Code! Buy 'em both... buy 'em all! Mwahahahahahaaaaaa! :emot-yarr:  :D

*ahem* Sorry, had a little fit there... ;)

I have yet to acquire a Peanut but I do have a small CV Texas Jack. It's a very nice little folder and I can highly recommend it. You can buy it (first!) with confidence...

Thanks timberweasel! This is what i was leaning towards it seems like itd be a good size and a good kind of "do it all pattern" would u agree with that statement? Also does it carry well in the pocket? Thank. U both for the help

Yes, in all regards. I find the master blade on the small model to be adequate for bigger chores (such as a bit of food prep) and the pen blade is also very handy. Some may prefer rounded bolsters for pocket carry comfort but I don't find the square-ish bolsters on the Texas Jack to be a problem. :)

In that size range, if you can wait and stretch your budget a bit, you might go for the new GEC 15 boys knife or an "old" GEC 66 jack, or the Case Swayback jack in CV.
We've all been where you are. Most of us end up sticking with Brett's "Code" (no matter if we do it straight away, or just dilute it in time). Might happen to you as well...

The Texas jack in amber bone and CV steel is available for less than $50 at several retailers. It's a great knife. You can also get a chestnut bone peanut in CV that should be available in your price range. Here's a pic of my Texas jack (62032):

Shown here with the Craftsman peanut I won in Vince's peanut give away.

I prefer the Texas Jack to the peanut. It is still very pocket friendly, but gives you a three-finger handle as opposed to a two-finger grip on the peanut (if I am remembering correctly) and a bit more blade.

Thanks for the input guys, most likely gonna go with the texas jack as it fills the void between my full size trapper and mini copperlock (which is close iin size but has only one locking blade, and is SS) im a fan of the amber bone on my mini copperlock so this should be a good fit also a big fqn of clip point main blades and useful secondary blades ( realy like the pen/ warncliff style on the jack) and im sure the peanut will join further down the road :)

Yup, count me in with the Get 'em Both Gang. :D;)

Even though I prefer the smaller size and rounded bolsters of the peanut, I would still have to lean more toward the TX jack as a great "do it all knife" if I had to *shudder* pick one over the other.

Be patient and look for a Queen Cutlery No.2 Jack. Some are D2 older may be in carbon, very compact in between Peanut and Small TJ.

Non Jacks in carbon you might like to consider in future: The CASE Medium Stockman Chestnut Bone cv, can't recall the No. I'm away from the hoard, but it has the TJ's Pen blade rather than that Spey thing! very useful. How about a CASE Slimline Trapper in cv? long nife but thin and really pocket friendly.

All the best, Will
