I watched The Great Escape on Saturday night. I love this movie.
While watching I noticed that James Garner's character "the scrounger" whips out some sort of primitive multitool while saying "this is all I need..".
I never noticed this before in all the times I have seen this movie,
Anyone know what it was he had?

Such a great movie with lots of improvisation of gear.

My guess is that it was an OSS Escape Tool. Bob (JOOLIESEWS) has written an extensive article here about this tool in his great "Before there was Leatherman" series.

That might be it. It was on screen for a second or two; all I could see is that it had multiple blades / tools, but I did'nt get a great look.
Wow that OSS escape tool i pretty cool. I love this old "spy" stuff!

I thought it was a SAK styled tool of some kind, but I haven't seen it in a while. Great thread, I'll have to look into it more. Should watch it again anyways, awesome movie. I also reccomend the book highly. It goes into some more detail on some things, maybe some PracTac or Wilderness folk can pick some stuff up?

I watched the movie for the first time about 5 years back on video. I remember thinking that it looked like a large-size Victorinox SAK. I rewound and found I was right. It's a knife that wasn't made until well after WWII. :jerkit: Still a good flick, though.

Sounds like a good movie. I'll have to see if the local video store has a copy I can rent this weekend.

The SAK was probably contemporary with the Triumph Hilts rode in the big jump.
