I sharpened up a couple of knives today and as I have often read about ... I stroped it afterwards. I have plenty of leather around since I make leather goods. Not for sale anymore but still for myself and friends.(Work has me nuts) I used a hunk of "I think" rouge that came with my leather carving tool in order to keep it slick. It looks like a hunk of Chalk. You know the fat ones you give to your kids to write on the sidewalks with. Think about a third of one and thats what I have.

It worked GREAT !! after I brought the knives through the Surgical black Arkansas I stroped it for a few. Well more than a few But anyway the knives .... both of them will shave not only your arm or leg but My Face !!

The problem is the Chalk stuff completly globbed up and caked on the leather. I took sandpaper to it and that brought it right back but still it was a slick black piece of Chalk stuff on my strop at the end.
I have read hear about Stroping and heard mentioned a Green Paste ?? What is it ? Where can I get it? and Does it also just become a 1/16 of an inch of black crusty stuff on top of your leather? If so How do you clean your strop?

The green stuff I use is the 1st grade polishing paste from Lowes. It will goop some but don't worry about it. It's the polishing substance that does the work, not the leather.

Where do you pick it up ?? Do you just reapply it each time or do you clean off the residue first ?

I get it at Lowes. I'm a slob. I don't clean anything until I trip over it or my wife sees it. Buildup hasn't been a problem for me.

I use micro fine honing compound or something like that from woodcraft. It comes in a 20 ounce block ( consistency is like fairly soft wax) for about $19. It will last years on a strop, the 20 ounce bar is actually meant for use with a buffer. The grit size is 1/2 micron. It works great. I just rub enough of it into the strop that its got the green color, but not a heavy buildup. The grain of the leather still shows through. After awhile it starts to look like its getting glazed over and I rub some more into the strop. no cleanup or anything.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.
