I've had a Groove for a couple days now (the one that I received from OregonEdge), and I'm starting to think that I like this knife even more than my beloved Cyclones! The handle REALLY feels GREAT in my hand, and as with ALL of the Kershaw knives I've owned, is very solidly built. All of the pieces of the knife fit together with 100% precision, and the handle is nice-n-smooth on the edges. And then there is the (VERY smooth opening) blade itself...A work of art. Up to this point I had never seen a (non-custom) folder with a blade that has deep grooves in it....Very nice.

Those grooves are supposed to be really good for cutting up bales of "hay" Dann.;) Glad you like the new knife. That's one of the few Kershaws I have yet to own or handle. Maybe I'll have to change that.

Cheers,
jon

alright big guy, we need pics now. you know that ;) lets hear how she cuts, be it you, or something else :D

Hey Dann, glad you like the Groove. There really are other Kershaws other than the Cyclones and ZT's...You know I have 6 Cyclones, and a ZT0200. But they hardly get any carry time anymore. I'm basically down to two: the Groove and the big ENER-G. Talk about a razor, the ENER-G is a real piece of work! But this is about the Groove, and it is an impressive knife...something about the frame lock that I like. It is really fast on the open, and with a little time, you'll be flicking that puppy open as fast if not faster than a Cyclone will fire.

Give it a workout...It can handle anything you can throw at it, and it's also really cool looking!

I'm not much into digital photography, so the pictures won't be posted anytime soon, but my Groove looks like everyother standard Groove. However, I did polish the spine and the back of the handle just for the heck of it. I really am very pleased how smooth this knife is, both in feel, and in action. It easily flips open as quickly as most AO's I have, and the lock-up is rock-solid.

I haven't cut myself with it (yet), but it does feel to be VERY sharp. It doesn't look like the groove design on the sides of the blade has any effect on the cutting edge.

it kind of grew on me too... it's one of the better flippers out there, and super thin with perfect lock up and a firm grip. glad you like it!

I LOVE my Groove. I carry it every day. The heft of it makes it feel so solid, and when you snap it open hard, the whole thing moves just enough to make it feel alive. Lockup is rock solid; this is the first folder I've ever tried to spinewhack (it passed). The grooves themselves make it look good without going overtly "tactical" the finger grips are perfectly positioned....its my all-time favorite knife!

Here's a picture...not mine but mine gets USED, so...

NO they do not. As you sharpen the knife, you grind the grooves down as well, so the edge itself is perfectly smooth like on any other folder.

A little correction...the grooves in the blade do effect the knife's cutting ability. RJ posted here somewhere that the grooves in the blade can reduce drag up up 80% when cutting certain materials (he mentioned rubber products, like hoses and other pliable materials). The reason for this is that while the edge does the cutting, only the blade groove ridges drag against the material you're cutting. Makes perfect sense, less total blade area to make contact with the material, so less drag and better cutting efficiency.

Hope this makes sense...

Another question about the grooves. What degree does the edge come sharpened at? 40 degrees or 30 degrees?
Has anyone tried to regrind the edge? If so, did the grooves on the blade make this any more difficult?

Mine came in around the 30ish range(maybe a little more). I've took it down to about
12 per side and the grooves don't make it any more difficult to sharpen.

I've been using the 30 degree setting on the sharpmaker, with a 40 degree micro bevel. The grooves actually provide nice feedback when sharpening with the sharpmaker. If you can feel and/or hear the grooves sliding along the corners of the rods, you know you're hitting the shoulder of the bevel. When you don't feel the grooves, you know your putting a micro-bevel on the edge.

Good point. I haven't used mine yet, but this info will come in very handy.

I love this knife. Perfect size for EDC - it's 3.5 inches, but it's a smaller, less sheeple-scary blade than the Lahar or JYD 2. Very functional blade shape. It's nice and compact in the pocket. The clip is small and positioned so the knife rides relatively deep. The frame lock is solid. The G-10 overlays give it the right amount of grippiness. Good ergos on the handle. The grooves give it a unique look, and I've found they do reduce friction and improve release when cutting (I've noticed this on some food prep - things like cucumbers and cheese that stick to a chef's knife fall off of the Groove). I've been happy with the performance of the steel, holds an edge good enough for me. The flipper is fast and smooth, IMO better than any of Kershaw's other flippers (the only other one I own is the Lahar, but I've handled them all at NGK). And I think it looks cool. Great knife!!!:)

I like my Groove so much that I made a trade for ANOTHER one today. I traded one of my LNIB Cyclones for a LNIB Groove. The really nice thing about this trade is that the guy I'm trading with lives in the same state as I do, so delivery will be quick.

 you...you...you actually traded off a Cyclone? The devil better put on a sweater tonight!

glock, you have lost your freakin mind you know that. its like my saying that i would trade my Offset for spec bump! i would be crazy to do that! (now a custom bump, maybe, but a custom Offset, then sure!) :D :D :D :D

I think Dann has jumped into the sea. Stay in the boat!

Although Mr. Martin's blade is hard to pass up. ;)
