The guard on the BK9 is perfect or just a tad too small?

I have a bit of a fear that my hand might slip above the guard on the BK9, while chopping. Has anyone experienced that? Or is it just extended enough that it prevents slipping? Would a solution, if it's slightly too small, be to install different grip "scales?" Those would extend (in some material) past the metal "guard." Are those mass produced?

I've NEVER had it happen nor have I heard of it.

In my experience the knife pulls away from me, my hand tends to slide back toward the lanyard hole. Cutting your hand while batoning would seem to me to be very unlikely. Stabbing would be the most likely action resulting in an injury like you've described.

The only time I've ever hurt myself with a knife is when I was doing something I shouldn't have been doing with that knife, the ergo's of the 9 (I don't own one but I've played with a few, and I'm sure other BH's will agree) are very well set up for a chopping blade and I honestly don't think you'll see to much of a problem with creeping forward on it, stabbing I wouldn't imagine too much issue with either. I really like the grip on the big beckers, secure in a lot of different holds but not overly moulded so that It would be awkward.

I have done a lot of chopping with a 9. rkmoore is right your hand slides back if you dont have a good grip not forward. The swell at the back keeps you from losing it.

Use a lanyard. If you wrap the lanyard around your thumb and let the knife hang blade away from you, then roll your hand down to get it, it will secure the lanyard across the back of your hand preventing slipping forward.

I'll second Psyop and rkmoore.
My hand has a tendency to creep backward while chopping, but never forward.

I chop like this all the time with my BK-2 and I have had zero problems and the 2 has no gaurd except for what is built into the handle.

Ethan Becker knew what he was doing when he designed em. Handle & grip are top notch IMO. Also, what everyone else said !!!

I can honestly say I've never thought of this problem. No fear man, if your working the knife properly, you won't get hurt.

Hey, dresnor; finally got around to putting some paracord through the hole and your method looks like it will work well for more dangerous work (although I don't quite know what that is). I set it to give me a full grip on the knife as I don't need any leverage. I actually made two knots; the longer one lets me wrap it around twice.

I don't plan on doing any fighting with it, but when I hold it I sort of go "weapon." It seems slightly too short a guard. But, I have not practiced knife fighting.

But this grip technique seems to add some stability. Thanks again.

And thanks to other posters.

+1 on the lanyard. I've always thought of modifying the guard and pommel, but it's just perfectly thought out IMO.
Chop away!
