I think its neat but might develop some bad fundamentals.. From what I understand the ability to ustilizing a floating hand motion (a creeping motion that keeps your hands from descending down the spindle. while still enabling you to exert downward pressure) is critical to proper bowdrill form.. s while it might be good as far as providing students with a feeling of success..it might need to be used sparingly.. also if you have string on hand than whynot juist make a bowdrill... just a thought,.

I think you can use it, but I agree, you should stress that the thumb loops is simply to learn how to do it.
I have used thumb loops to learn as well, it is it nice just to see a coal for all your effort. I also think thumb loops would be easier to make and not break than a bow drill with natural cordage.
