I have a love of trying and doing things the old fashion way in the forge. Well since we had the chance I thought it might be fun to try a a spike hawk the old,old fashion way. By folding and welding. Not many pics but I think you can get the gest of it..By the way this was the gnarliest piece of wrought Ive ever seen. It had to be welded, and welded, then it would delaminate and have to be welded again. It would delaminate at a white heat
It took three clean fires and a crap load of flux to finally weld this thing up right
I wouldent begin to guess what this thing will look like etched. Sorry I didnt take more pics, to busy dodging flying slag and burning flux
First pic is the piece of wagon rim folded in the middle and the weld started for the spike. One side is also forged out into a cheek and blade.
Next is has the spike welded up and the blade flats forged out ready for a high carbon bit. In this case 1065..
last is a pic of the piece all welded up and the durface cleaned up. Hard to believe this use to be a crusty old wagon rim..
