Reading the specs it seems like its a rather small knife. The models are in boxes at the dealer here, so haven't had a chance to look one over. Impressions anyone? In hand pics? Thoughts?

The Harpy was the Spyderco that brought me into the world of Spyderco.

Small? Certainly. Small, unobtrusive, legal-friendly blade. Easily concealed, quick into action with a Spyderdrop.

It is my constant companion, the one knife I carry at all times to the exclusion of all other blades. There is generally more than one knife on my person, but if I am only carrying one, you can bet it will be the Harpy.

I will also point out that it has been in the Spyderco catalog since 1987, which should stand as some kind of testament to its staying power.

Aloha!

I'd say the Harpy due to experience...plastic ties can sometimes cause a blade to slide, only getting partially cut. BUT, such is NOT the case with a Harpy!!! You will be surprised at the versatility of this Hawksbill bladed wonder!!!

OBTW, cardboard will not stand a chance! LOL!

God bless :D

Don't have any in hand pics of it, but if you look at the Compare Sizes page on my website you can compare it to any two of about sixty Spyderco models. Short answer is it's about Delica size. As a matter of fact, the handle of the Merlin, the FRN version of the Harpy, is identical to that of the Delica and Salt I, so it would feel about the same in hand as one of those. The stainless and G10 version share a handle with the Standard, Worker, and Hunter, so aside from the blade shape, would feel quite similar to any of those three. If you really want a hawkbill blade, find the Harpy too small for your tastes, and can live with FRN there's always the Endura size SpyderHawk. As Daywalker said, the hawkbill shape is ideal for plastic ties and any other use where you don't want the material being cut to slip off the blade. Great for cardboard and carpet too. On the other hand, the Rescue spreads peanut butter better. :D

Aloha Paul!

Was in earlier but just checked, I can't get in again either. Might be down for maintenance, webmasters seem to think this time of day has the least traffic.

Oh...okay, cool. I thought I got banned for something! :footinmou

Okay, to stick to the thread, *ahem*, what The Deacon said!!! :D

God bless you my friend!

I went down and handled a harpy today. Nice shape, but just too small. I feel uncomfortable with a knife that wicked sharp, with a handle that falls short of my fingers. Damn. Any bigger hawkbills out there with SE?

As i.v. said, there's the Spyderhawk. While the one is this picture is PE, it still should give you a pretty good idea of the relative size compared with the Harpy and Merlin. While they are discontinued, the SE version is still fairly easy to find. The handle is Endura size, as a matter of fact, on some of the early ones, the handles were marked ENDURA rather than SPYDERHAWK.
