I have to be the most fortunate hoggette in the trough these days, at least so far as getting the opportunity to investigate and report on some of the best old school Busse steel out there!
It is what I love most about this forum: my Busse extended family. To those of you Ive met (Class of Blade 2008) and those of you I havent, I salute you. This place brings some unique fun and wonderful people to my life, and I appreciate that more than you can know!
In my last review (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=665321) I talked about the SHBA and how great it is as an all-round blade. Constant exposure to it over the span of a few weeks, using it for daily tasks, made me wonder just exactly how big a blade had to be to perform decently at most jobs. I mentioned wanting to try out an old school original Mean Street, and thanks to a fantastic fellow Busse fan, I was given the opportunity to do exactly that! Little did I know, however, that packed into that box with my test Mean Street would be
A DUCCI HEART!!!
Now this is a fantastic little blade, and Randucci explained that he wanted to give me the opportunity to see how I liked it, as I had commented previously that it looked just right for my small lady hands. I immediately set to using it in the kitchen, as the pic above demonstrates. Wonderful! Handy little slicer, sharp and well-balanced in all the right places. I found it very useful for most tasks, although I am becoming fond of something just a little bit heavier the Heart is a jewel for certain, and a lot of fun!
Of course I really couldnt wait to get my hands on the little fellow, either. This is an original SHMS that has been well-loved with some coating missing. Didnt slow it down any, I must say. Comparison pic with Ducci Heart and the SHBA:
I found the Mean Street to be perfect for its size. The handle weight (this is no narrow, skinny little Street) really helps the ergonomics, making it a surprisingly good slicer. Unfortunately, lost my best Mean pics, but here are a couple more shots for you:
Overall, this was a great chance to play with and compare these blades, and I have Randucci to thank for a wonderful opportunity!
