The High Price of Salt Setups

Hi Guys.

I got some quotes on some stainless pipe and tubing yesterday. I wasn't real happy with the aspects. The best price I could get on 316L SS tubing, 4.5" dia w/.375 wall, was around $95 per foot. That was if I bought at least 6 feet. :grumpy:

Any of you salt-pot guys get a line on some tubing or sched-80 somewhere around this size?

That looks about right for 316L, it even sounds a bit lower than what I would pay to replace my tube. With the luck that I have with these things I would really appreciate anybody who has sources posting them.

When I was building a water cooled burner assy I bought my stainless pipe (it was 2") from a place that sold overruns and good scrap. Cost me about 1/2 what new was. Problem is you never know what they have at any given moment.

Good point, Stevo.

I say if you are buying any metal that is unclear as to what it is, you better be getting it for a decent price at least.

Higgy, I started building one myself. I may have a extra piece of SS pipe around. I forgot what gauge and size. I'll let you know.

Higgy, that's the best luck of anyone I know... John Andrews found some pipe for me, and I'm going to use those pieces first but I've been really sweating replacing them when I have to. Your thread has given me two sources to save for that day...thanks.!

I've been collecting the parts for mine for about 12 months. I bought the Don Fogg controller from SouthEast Heating and am now looking for a good burner (don't really want to build another Reil if I don't need to).

So anyone have a good source for burners? And what would people suggest for the forge body?

Thanks, and Higgy how about some pics as you start building this bad boy?

LOL! You know me, Dave... I'm a pic-takin' mofo!

Dave, the best part of the deal with your stainless pipe,it didn't cost me one cent! A local contractor owed me a favor.
