The history of shop 1, 2 and BirGorkha?

I was wondering about the history of the shops.
I assume that shop 1 was started when HI was started over 14 years ago. So when did shop 2 start and why did it replace #1. Did the kami's (Kesar, Durba etc) work in shop 1 and 2 or when did the kami's as we know them come about? And shop #3 is the famous BirGorkha right, and why did it replace #2?

I know most of the details but I'm a little lost when it comes to the timeline! :)

I can't remember the timeline myself.

We sold village models starting out 14 years ago and commissioned various village kamis to do certain knives for us.

Maybe 10 years ago we went into cahoots with what we called our number one (shop 1) shop and they made khukuris to our specs. We still got khukuris from village kamis and still commissioned a few village kamis to make stuff for us.

Pala got shop 2 going maybe four years ago and it evolved into BirGorkha (Gelbu's name for the factory when he registered the business with HMG). Several kamis from shop 1 either have worked or now work at BirGorkha. Bura and Kesar always worked around the Kathmandu Valley and never outside.

And here we are.

Chris,

I was checking out the Archives today myself. I decided to search for "Villager" and see what I found. I almost got the entire story of Rusty and his affair with Audry (still unfolding). And alot of the beginnings.

There is alot of knowlege in this forum. I would actually pay if someone could get a copy of the old old files that were deleted a long time ago. (Wasnt there 2 archives, and the oldest was deleted?)

Uncle, do you know anyone who has these?

Bro it's been since I've been around that Shop 2 started and consequently BirGhorka.
I registered in May of '99 so that will make me being an active forumite 3 years this May.
I don't recall exactly when Shop 2 started myself, but it could probably be figured out from the archives if someone wanted to finger the information out.

Dave Spark said there hadn't been any threads lost although I think there might have been several days when we were having trouble, whether my WebTV's fault or not that didn't make it into the archives.
There was a lot of unpleasantness around at that time as well so those few days lost wouldn't be that big of a deal to me except to show, well perhaps it's better off If I don't put my feelings about it down.
It's probably best forgot about by those of us who remember.

HOWEVER......

Spark did tell me he combined the 2 archives into one at the same time so all of the good information is still there.
There's also some great information in the old Knife Forums archives as well.
I imagine since Photopoint has folded that most or perhaps even all of the old beautiful pix of old and beautiful khukuris are gone.
That's a damned shame and a travesty because they are lost to everyone forever now.
There might, just might, still be a record of the old photos and everything else on a floppy that I think, only think, that a fellow forumite might have.;)

Yvsa,

Now that you mention that I remember the thread about combining the Archives.

Yeah...I was looking at all the sights with pictures at first until I realized what happened. All I have to go on is my imagination and the words that were written.

Also, Cliff Stamp used to be around ALOT more. Lots of little reviews here and there, really amazing reading.

I guess I am starting from the present and moving backwards...geez...increadible stuff.

I am glad it is saved somewhere.

Maybe I'm mixed up because it took so long to get BirGorkha up and running. In Nepal you have to get a government permit to do just about anything -- sort of like the building permits in most cities -- if you want to put up an awning you need a permit. Except in Nepal you have to get a permit to buy electric wire, electric motors, fuse boxes, phone line (which we still don't have) -- everything we needed had to have a permit. And permits take a long time unless you are willing to pay under the table to get things expedited. This is where Sgt. Karka came in.

Did I mention that farmers need government permits to buy fertilizer?
