The hole in Cold Steel's Goldeneye

I love both Spyderco and Cold Steel, and I'm indifferent to all the bashing and controversy Cold Steel gets. They both make great knives.

But the round hole in the new Golden eye is pretty blatant, even if they did add a bushing to get around the Trademark.

I just saw it and, while I'm not very invested in this this kind of thing, I was pretty shocked at CS's boldness.

I know many people from both camps are going to have very strong opinions on this one.

That said, it's a pretty nice knife, and I'll most likely end up with one.

Just wanted to share my thoughts upon seeing the Goldeneye.

Thx.

The goldeneye won't hurt spydercos sales 1/10 of 1% anytime soon. Doesn't float my boat but I give CS credit for continually going out on a limb in their efforts for innovation. You can't beat a triad in the pocket. But most of us slice marshmallows for a living so it doesn't matter.

The overall knife design is fine but the "golden eye" is fugly. It reminds me of those cheap dollar store knives with the large flat thumb stud.

I can't imagine anyone getting very worked up over that modified opening hole. I like both brands. That bushing just adds complexity, cost and it's ugly.

You guys are right in that it won't hurt Spyderco in the least.

And wrong if you think people won't get worked up. Most of us are pretty rational. But there are an equal amount, right here on this forum, who LIVE to nitpick this kind of thing.

I think some of the regulars here actually LIVE right in their chairs, never using the knives they collect and post about 397 times a day.

(Except to slice marshmallows, of course. And we all know, optimum geometry, heat treat, 77hrc steel, high CATRA edge retention, latest 10,364.867 & 1/3 LB test lock, current trendy assisted springy opening gimmick, titanium nitride coating, carbon aftermarket blaze orange scales, tritium back spacer, super deep carry pocket to socks clip, anodized titanium fittings, ball bearing bushings, Japanese honed mirror edge, and full encyclopedic knowledge of carbide matrices are all necessary to accomplish such feats).

Anyway, back to the subject, I don't want to start or stir any fire with my post. Personally, I don't get into politics. I just really like knives!

Both companies offer excellent products. But I will admit to Lynn Thompson's policies and practices being somewhat ridiculous and shady.

PS. I also agree the knife has a very fugly side. I hate green g-10. Hate gold hardware. Hate deep carry and slim pocket clips. And they could have easily used a thumb stud or simple hole of any shape.

But the materials, construction, and design are stellar. If I end up with one, it's definitely turning black, getting a clip overhaul, and losing that ridiculous brass bushing.

But. . .

The Gayle Bradley 2 is DEFINITELY my next knife.

Of course my SHORT want list of knives is at least a page long, so there's plenty out there that needs to be acquired before ever thinking about the Golden eye.

I kinda like the golden accent in the bushing. Although, it does look very similar to the spyderco gayle bradley... haha.

The round hole is not trademarked so anyone can use it and many do I'm not sure what I think about it without getting one in hand but this doesn't even remind me of a spydie hole.

It actually is trademarked.
It is not patented any longer.

Cold Steel may have found a way to tweak it enough that it does not infringe the trademark, as they added that ramped insert.

The tanto manages to have a resemblance to an Emerson CQC-7 sort of, and it has a hole which is reminiscent of Spyderco...they managed to find a way to piss off fans of two brands at the same time. :D

Never steel another mans hole. Not cool. But hey, i guess its kind of a compliment too. I am pretty sure benchmade got permission to use the hole as Spyderco got permission to use the wave. Did CS get permission.

I believe that knife fans that get pissed off about the Golden Eye get pissed off easily!

I'm not pissed off in the least, I just don't care for it.

Same here. Knife is not my cuppa but, from where I sit, the Golden Eye's opener isn't "a round hole used as an opening device on a folding knife", it's "a large thumb stud with a hole in the middle used as an opening device on a folding knife".

Did bm get permission?

See this is the exact reason why Spydie people and Cold Steel people cant mix,it was bound to happen sooner or later ....

Why can't they mix it?

I'm here. Haven't exploded yet.

Benchmade did not get permission to use the Round Hole.
