...owing to the fact that people disagree on the following things:
1. Which blades to put in there (wood saw, metal saw, file, serrated blade, flat blade, scissors, remgrit saw)
2. Which screwdrivers to put in (#000, #00, #0, #1, #2, phillips, x-small, small, medium, large flathead, or one that accepts standard 1/4 hex bits)
3. The ideal size and weight of the multitool
4. And which other implements should be included (can/bottle opener, cork opener, awl, small blades, crate opener, marlinspike, tweezers, toothpick, pin, magnifying glass, clip, keyring, hook, ballpoint pen, led light, etc. etc. etc.
There's just too much configuration and I don't think it's possible for the tool makers to put all that stuff in (for it would make the whole thing fat). And that some people don't like a tool which has everything in it. Some people are picky about which tool to have and one implement too many seems to put them off.
Although there are things that people seem to agree on:
1. Quality fit and finish
2. All outside opening implements (is there anyone who disagrees with this?
)
3. One handed opening (but which blades? and the other tools as well?)
4. All blades should lock
5. No stubby drivers
I guess all tool makers could do is just to bring out an extensive line of tools ala Victorinox and let people choose.
Or offer customizable tools (a nightmare for the engineers and quality control and maintenance (warranty repair) people in the tool makers I'd imagine).
