The importance of spare keys

If you don't have a set of spare keys for your car somewhere outside of your car, get them there. I'm paying for my ignorance to the tune of $50. Not too bad considering, but ten seconds of forethought could have saved me the trouble. Don't let it happen to you.

Man, I leave one in my wallet after I locked myself out of my car 2x in one week.

Moving to G&G. :)

I've carried a spare car key in my wallet ever since the time I locked my keys in the car...while it was running. :footinmou

Carry one in my wallet. Alot of manufacturers give you a one-two use plastic one.

Reminds me of the time I locked my keys in the car, a TR6, I was really screwed, the top was down and it was starting to rain. But I figured it out.

Amen to that. I keep the spare ignition key in my wallet, and if for some unfortunate event that I should lose the wallet, AAA should be on the way. BTW, my tip for carrying keys in the wallet (especially the newly cut ones with the not-so-leather-friendly teeth) is to wrap them around with clear tape to prevent snagging onto the lining of the wallet.

I have a Mercedes. You call them, give them the password, and they unlock it remotely.

You used to be able to do it yourself over the web, but there were some security concerns, so they disabled that.

I carry spare keys to my car, my wife's car, and our townhouse.

If I get caught outside for some reason, I can slip into my car, drive home, and get into my house.

I keep a spare in my wallet after locking myself out of my truck a couple of times. :o

After paying about 50 bucks for Pop a Lock to open my truck, I have kept a spare set of keys at work, a spare set hidden on the outside of my truck, a spare set in my jacket, a spare set in my wallet and a spare set at home. I have house keys hidden all over the place too.

Oh, about three years ago, I was working at Wally World as a manager, and I was working the early shift. My keys could be pulled out of the ignition with the truck still running, and when I got to work (still dark outside), I went to shut the truck off, and realized that I didn't have the keys. Well, the whole way to work (thankfully only 15 minute drive), I heard something banging on the truck door (old Toyota p/u at the time, my field beater now), and I got out, and the keys were in the door! I lucked out that time, huh?

I don't lock my car, actually you can't lock the keys in the car, if they're in the ignition the door will automatically unlock when it closes.

You could always carry and learn to use one of these,(as long as it doesn't violate any federal, state or local laws).

Really? Never heard of that. You must have a 2005? My son has a 1999 ML-320 (he doesn't know any better) and I don't see how that could be unlocked 'remotely'?

(I had a 500SL that I bought used. It had only one set of keys - something I couldn't live with. Asked my dealer to get me a spare set and they said they had to send the original key to Birmingham. So I parked the car for a week while my ONLY key travelled to Birmingham to be cloned. Came back a week later with a note stating they had difficulty duplicating the 'original factory' key and I'd have to make do with the ONE key I had been given when I bought the car. Sold the car three days later.)

Wow! That's a mess. I would simply have not put up with it. And on an SL, indeed.

The remote unlock is part of TeleAide. They can track and disable a stolen car too.

i have a spare key secured to the inside lip of a tire well w/ duck tape.

i should probably check to see if it's still there.

hehhehehhhe, this is why i carry a strider. every time i lock myself out of the apt. i have to climb a tree and pry open a window. i guess that sort of counts as a spare key right?

I had a key hidden under the bumper, but it got knocked off when I was rear-ended a month and a half ago. :grumpy: Never did get around to replacing it yet.
