The Jester is a *vicious* little beastie...

Okay, okay, you Jester fans talked me into it, i picked up a Jester/Photon combo at my local sporting goods store, i compared the Ladybug (too small and delicate for my meathooks), the Cricket** (nice knife, a *little* slippery, but more than i felt like spending at the moment) and the Jester

despite it's diminutive size (lets be honest here, the Jester is one *tiny* knife), i found out that it actually *fit my hands*, once i stopped trying to hold it like a bigger knife, i discovered that it actually has *two* holding positions (thumb behind the blade, or index finger resting on front ridges, it was actually quite comfortable despite it's lack of stature

it locked up nice and solid, no side to side or up and down blade motion, feels like a very precise....surgical instrument, almost scalpel-esque

i also found out (the hard way) that the Jester has a *vicious* bite, this little gem's bite is *much* worse than it's bark, i opened the blade to full lock, and absentmindedly rested the side of my index finger on the back few serrations i must've moved the blade less than 1/32 inch, and ended up with a rather ragged little 1/2" "nip" from the Jester (now i know why serrated blades are preferred for self-defense....)

I'm actually so impressed with the little Jester, that i may not even delegate it to keyring duty, it might just end up in my pocket with the Dyad Jr, it's too nice a little blade to be banished to the keyring, that's for knives i don't care about, like the Buck Metro, only knives i *like* get to ride in my pocketses...

i'm actually feeling kinda' guilty about getting the Endura, as i prefer compact blades for EDC, and the Endura's beginning to seem too big for EDC, i may (Sal, please forgive me for this ;) ) end up moving the Endura to "car duty", as it's good to have a strong, reliable blade in the car for emergencies, it'll ride in my center console with my SureFire G2 (with 3W LED lamp upgrade) and Inova 24/7 emergency light.....

the Endura's apparently "too big" for work, as i think it scared the boss, i was joking with him about how even though i carry my "pocket knife" (2-handed open the Endura as to not scare him), i ended up cutting myself badly on a *computer case....*, his initial facial reaction when i (very safely and calmly) opened the Endura was that of stunned silence and a little fear, i actually felt bad for scaring him, so i folded it and put it back in my pocket to calm him down....

....however, if it wasn't for the Endura, i would never have gotten addicted to Spyderco knives, so it's served it's purpose, i guess
....oh who am i kidding, i *know* i'm going to EDC the Endura anyway, it's too cool *not* to.....

sorry for the off-tangent rambling, to bring it back on subject, Sal, the Jester's a great little blade, i understand it's appeal now.....

Here's the latest "MacTech's Spydie Family Portrait", with the newest member of the family, the Jester, awww...isn't he *cute*, careful, he bites though....

**I figured out a *GREAT* use for the Cricket, when i get one... (pro'lly with tax refund money), i'll take the clip off, and it will make an absolutely *perfect*......(drumroll please....)

*WALLET* knife, no gimmicky Swisscard for me, thanks, i just need a good, solid blade, and the Cricket will fit nicely inside my wallet, and since i *always* have my wallet with me......

The only knife that has ever taken a bite out of me was a Jester. It took a hunk of my finger with it, no blood though, just felt really weird for a few weeks.

Y'know, if i didn't see it myself, i'd never have believed it....

i just ran the Jester over a couple passes on the Sharpmaker, as i was cutting apart a frozen bloodworm foil pack for my fish on a ceramic cutting board, and i wanted to touch up the edge....

i ran the Jester over the white rods for a couple passes, then tested the edge... razor sharp, as usual, i put the knife away and went back to torturing my Sims ;)

a few minutes ago, i grabbed the Jester to open an envelope , as the light glinted across the tip edge, it looked like the very edge itself was actually floating a few microns away from the knife.

i grabbed a magnifying lens and inspected the tip edge, sure enough, it had been honed so sharp that i was actually seeing the burr, i took a piece of cardboard and "stropped" the blade, and looked again, it was now nice and straight, and "scary sharp"

i think i might have actually sharpened this knife to the mythical "wire edge", it certainly shaves hair like a razorblade, and it cut thru the envelope like it wasn't even there....

even getting close to touching this edge scares me, i know wire edges aren't the most durable edges and it will probably bend over with use, but i'll keep stropping it on cardboard to see how long i can keep the wire-edge intact....

it *must* be beginners luck, there's no way a newbie to sharpening like myself can get a wire edge on the first try..... i'll enjoy the scary-sharpness while it lasts....

Imagine how much more vicious the beast would be if it were made with VG10

The only Spyder-bite I've gotten was an inch long, fairly deep slice on my right thumb from my Endura. It was my first Spyderco so I wasn't completely up to speed with the opening hole idea and slipped off. Didn't hurt, just felt a small sting, and felt something dripping down my arm.

Serrated edge cuts hurt. Especially the spikey serrations that Kershaw uses.
