I make this post with a combination of joy and sadness. I don't think I need explain my feelings but if there are any who do not understand please email me personally.

This is the BirGorkha JKM -1. You may call it a puuko or a leuko or anything you like but we at Himalayan Imports will forever call it the JKM-1 in remembrance of our friend, James Mattis. I asked his wife, Toni, if I might use his name in association with this knife and she graciously consented.

How I wish James were here to see this! I know he would have loved this knife since it has been done exactly to his own design. It is something we had going when he left us but I am hoping that wherever he may be he can look down and see this knife and see what we have called it.

The knife is 7.5 overall with 3 inch handle. It is 7/8 wide and a shade less than 3/16 thick. It weighs about 5 ounces. The handle is chiruwa style as Jim had requested and extremely well done. The edge is hardened up to about 58 Rc and will take a hair of two off my arm. The knife is unmarked but future models will carry the HI logo and kami mark.

The scabbard is good quality brown leather done by the sarki with no name in dangler style.

This is not to be confused with the Kumar Kardas which Terry Sisco has for scabbards.
They will be here soon but will be a completely different ballgame.

This rig is $60 delivered to your door.

Call or email if interested. I received only 6 pieces and one is gone already. Five left.

Mine I hope.
I didn't do like my little Bro Rusty did. I e-mailed 1st.

In case I didn't get #6 Bro, I will take #7 or the 1st one in the next batch. Seven as well as the #4 is also very good for ndn's.

Uncle Bill,

As I had #4, if one is not left for Yvsa in this group, please send him mine. It's what James would've done.

Nothin' any of the cantina faithful wouldn't have done. (But thanks for the kind words.)

Glad it worked out.

Bro, that blade looks like it may be hollow ground?
It looks as if it doesn't have the radius cut that the karda's have.
Am I seeing that right, or is it just a figment of what the monitor is showing me?

And like Terry said, "VERY VERY NICE!!!!"

It's the monitor. Not hollow ground and neither was the model we sent over. The major change as I can best recall is the model was not a chiruwa handle and Jim wanted the chiruwa. The kamis were able to do this with no problem and followed the rest of the knife about 95%. Jim's greatest fear was they would grind the edge right up to the handle and, thankfully, they did not but followed the model grind.

The sarki with no name took a couple of liberties with his scabbard but he got one that works and looks good, too.

It is all karma.

For those who emailed telling me what a nice tribute this was for an extraordinary gentleman I would like to say this. It is not enough but it is at least something we could do to keep his memory alive. The kicker is we are using a knife he designed to his own liking to do just that and there is something good about that.

Many thanks to all for kind comments.

For those who ordered there is a now a growing wait list but we will ship ASAP. Patience, brothers!

Put me down for one. James was a nice man and I would agree that this is an excellent way of remembering him.

And you can add me to the list, Uncle. And I too would like to commend Blues on his selfless gesture. It's guys like this that make the HI forum the wonderful thing it is. Blues, I'd be proud to buy you a beer anytime!

I should be pretty thirsty by the time the FL Khukuri Konvention rolls around.

Thanks again, but James deserves the credit for helping inspire our better nature.

I do agree, however, that this forum and the cantina crew are second to none.

Uncle Bill, I'd like to get on the waiting list for one of these knives too, if possible. I like the idea of a knife designed by James…the JKM-1 will let me think of him when I use it and will hopefully serve as a reminder to try and emulate his approach to tools and life. I'll e-mail you about the details…

Jim
