My record keeping got sloppy 2 years back as we dealt with a family health issue and as I work through rebuilding the inventory listing of my collection, I need some help. I was first attracted to Andy's work by the Runt and the utility knife shaped Bow Legged Joe and have several of both in my collection and as I sat down this morning, i realized that I'm confused by the variations of the # Fingered Joe knife.

I thought the knives pictured were the 'Bow Legged Joe'. From tip to pommel, the bottom four knives measure almost exactly 6 inches. The top knife, I picked up from AZ Custom Knives, and was purchased as a Bow Legged Belt Knife and measures just shy of 7.25 inches from tip to pommel.

I've seen the smaller Joe models also called
- 2 Finger Joe
- 3 Finger Joe

and most recently, the past Friday Sale thread identified knife 2 and 3 as Bow Legged Joes. I was lucky enough to shark knife 02 and though I don't have it in hand yet for a side by side picture, it certainly does appear to be shorter than the knives already in the collection (which I believe are Bow Legged Joes)...

Can anyone help clear up my confusion? Are the knives in the collection really 3 Finger Joes and 2FingerJoe == Bow Legged Joe?

Bow Legged Joe is the smallest of the "Joes' and the model that's most commonly offered.

There's a bigger size called a 3 Finger Joe - which I do believe there may be some in the works getting made. It's been an obsolete or retired pattern for quite some time now. Andy said he's not a fan of it as it's difficult to 'get it right' when grinding. The dude is a perfectionist - so I get it.

The biggest 'Joe' is the Bow Legged Chopper. There's a couple blade blanks of the BLC on the pattern board, but again - difficult to get the grind right so it's rarely made.

I'll try to remember to lay the patterns side by side for a comparison pic on Tuesday.

Edit - the top one in your picture is an old school 3FJoe. The others are BLJoes.

Thank you -

As I collect my records, I'll cross reference the Friday sale thread number and add that to the inventory. My confusion may stem form not being precise enough in my differentiation of the names.

Again - I appreciate your assistance - thanks in advance!

Have a great day!

Excellent collection Shamr0ck! If that top joe ever needs a new home id be happy to provide one for him!

Here's my comparison shot.

Threw the battery in for comparison.

This is my understanding (smallest to biggest):

Bow Legged Joe (aka 2 Finger Joe)
3 Finger Joe
Bow Legged Belt Knife
Bow Legged Chopper

Think the one on top is a Bow Legged Belt Knife, and the four on bottom are 3 Finger Joes.

Thanks Kirkwood. The Belt knife I'm totally unfamiliar .. appreciate the clarity.

Wasn't there a model called the Snubnose? Or is that the same as the three finger?

There was a snub nose model which was a collaboration with the maker at Backwoods Knives as I understand it. I had both one of Andy's and one by bill Akers (backwoods) and they migrated to others' collections 18 months or so ago as I started saving for my daughters new competition rifle

I'll see if I can find pics
